STO 27R - Engineering Program Specialist

The Team
The Engineering Branch at the Ministry of Forests is an established team of 55 professionals, including engineers, forest technologists, and administrative staff, dedicated to maintaining and upgrading over 12,000 km of Forest Service Roads and bridges across the province. This team collaborates closely with regional operations, BC Timber Sales, BC Wildfire Services, Corporate Services for the Natural Resource Sector, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, and other partners. As a member of this team, you’ll directly contribute to BC Wildfire Services’ mandate of delivering effective wildfire management and emergency response, protecting lives and values at risk, and promoting sustainable, resilient ecosystems.

The Role
Engineering Program Specialist provides essential professional and technical engineering support to BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) operations across the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. By offering expert engineering advice, guidance, and support, the role collaborates with BCWS and Natural Resource District teams to ensure wildfire risk reduction and rehabilitation efforts are effectively managed, focusing on safe access and infrastructure. The role also coordinates the provision of specialized expertise, data, and resources from the Engineering Branch to BCWS as needed, adapting to shifting regional needs to support wildfire management across the province.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Forestry or Natural Resource Management or a technical diploma in a related field (i.e. forestry, forest engineering, survey geomatics, geoscience, construction) or equivalent.
• Registered in good standing, or eligible for immediate registration, with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or equivalent. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Experience in Natural Resource Management, Resource Road Engineering, Natural Resource Operations and access management.
• Experience in contract and/or project supervision.
• Valid B.C. driver’s licence.

Preferences:

• Preference may be given to a candidate with experience in wildfire suppression.
• Preference may be given to a candidate with experience in wildfire rehabilitation.
• Preference may be given to a candidate with experience in wildfire risk reduction.
• Preference may be given to a candidate with experience in road deactivation.
• Experience in project supervision and/or field reviews, including acting as CRP or CM or POR on road or bridge projects.

Provisos

• May be required to operate a variety of equipment.
• Conduct fieldwork which may include travel and outdoor work in all weather conditions and flying in remote locations. Includes CORE deployments of up to 14 days when required.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
