Job Summary

The Team
The Strategic Initiatives team was formed in 2023 to address emerging natural resource priorities in the Kootenay Boundary Region. With a motivative and supportive group of four, we work closely with First Nations, local governments, and other partners to create meaningful solutions. What makes this team special is the variety of challenges we take on, often exploring new approaches that haven’t been tried before. We value collaboration, creativity, and the strong relationships we build both within our team and with the communities we serve.

The Role
As the Land & Resource Specialist, you’ll be responsible for coordinating regional priorities across provincial ministries, developing partnerships and agreements with First Nations. This position supports critical initiatives like drought response, modernize land use planning, recreation management and forest management. This is a great opportunity to work on diverse and impactful projects that support the well-being of local communities, while promoting inclusivity and collaboration with a range of partners. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Technical Diploma in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management) or an equivalent combination of education/training plus, 7 or more years’ experience working in a natural resource discipline.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience managing natural resource management projects or leading a component (e.g., sub-project) of a major project or regional initiative.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multi-disciplinary/multiple partner projects in which innovative solutions were implemented to solve a unique or complex natural resource management problem.
  • Demonstrated experience related to First Nations engagement, collaboration and relationship building.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Registered, or eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio), Biologist in Training (BIT) or Registered Biology Technologist (RPTech) with the College of Applied Biology (CAB).
  • Registered Forest Technologist (RFT), Trainee Forest Technologist (TFT) or Allied Science Trainee Forest Technologist (ASTFT) with the Association of B.C. Forest Professionals.
  • Experience within the natural resource sector within British Columbia.
  • Experience supervising or managing technical and/or professional staff in natural resource management.
  • Experience and/or training in planning, particularly land use planning for natural resources.
  • Experience and/or training in project management, including decision support.
  • Recent training and/or current experience in the use of GIS applications to communicate complex geospatial information.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position is geographically restricted to Cranbrook or Nelson. Other natural resource office locations in the Kootenay Boundary Region may be considered depending on office availability and operational requirements.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
