On November 30, 2024, 9-8-8 was launched in Canada as a new national three-digit number for suicide prevention and emotional distress. In 2022, CAMH was announced as the lead for the coordination and administration of 9-8-8, and has acted in this capacity to lead and coordinate the implementation of 9-8-8 and manage the operations and post-launch activities. As of November 2023, this ground-breaking new service is available 24/7/365, in English and French, and accessible to everyone from coast to coast to coast. CAMH is working closely with the federal government and key partners from different groups and communities, provinces, territories and building on our work on Talk Suicide Canada, to deliver this high quality, evidence-based, equitable suicide prevention service to Canada.

Position Description
9-8-8 and CAMH Education are seeking two (2) full-time, permanent Community Health and Education (CH&E) Specialist (Instructional Designer) to support the design, development and implementation of online courses and simulation-based learning for 9-8-8 responders.

Reporting to the Director of Community and Continuing Education, with a dotted line to the Manager of 9-8-8 Partnerships and Strategy, the CH&E Specialist will identify the training needs of the 9-8-8 target learners, apply best practices in instructional design and curriculum development to create tailored interactive courses, e-learning programs, and simulation-based education as well as support the creation of user guides, web-based resources, quick reference guides, job aids and other learning and support materials, as needed, for 9-8-8 responders. They will also support evaluation of the learning strategies and disseminate reports to 9-8-8 leadership. The CH&E Specialist will apply adult education and learning theories and instructional design models, as well as the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility to the development of education and training. The successful candidate will generate evidence-based content for e-learning programs and will also develop engaging learning activities that include branching scenarios, case studies, gamification, and virtual simulation to enhance the 9-8-8 responders’ learning process.

The CH&E Specialist will collaborate with team members in the simulation centre, digital innovation, and evaluation teams, as well as 9-8-8 subject matter experts, including healthcare professionals and clinical teams and lived experience experts, and other internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will be involved in the creation of evaluation tools to assess outcomes of educational activities and will work collaboratively with research analysts and evaluation coordinators to report on educational outcomes and impact. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple aspects of work simultaneously, and work independently, as well as with a diverse team. The CH&E Specialist will keep up with best practices, innovations, research, theories, technologies, and trends in the education field.

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Education, Instructional Design, Educational Technology or related discipline with three (3) years of experience in the field of adult education. Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional design models, curriculum development, and current and emerging learning technologies is required. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in several of the following areas as it relates to online learning is required: inter-professional collaboration and simulation, adult education, instructional design, the educational needs of health professionals and other professional staff in addiction and mental health, delivery of educational programming, health promotion and prevention, educational materials for patients and families, research and evaluation.
