Clinical Legal Counsel (Full-time 14 Month Contract) - Legal Services
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s leading addiction and mental health teaching hospital. As CAMH’s Clinical Legal Counsel (full-time, temporary, 14 month contract), you will provide legal support to CAMH clinical operations and, in doing so, support CAMH’s role as a leader in healthcare.
Reporting to the Director, Clinical Legal Services, the Clinical Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and litigation services to CAMH clinical teams and administrators with respect to mental health law. You will represent CAMH and its clinicians before the Consent and Capacity Board and resulting appeals to the Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Appeal, and in proceedings before other health law tribunals. You will be responsible for hearing-related consultations and preparation. As a member of CAMH Legal Services, you will also be involved in the development of CAMH internal policy, and the delivery of education and training to clinical teams. You will be called upon by CAMH’s Chief Legal Officer, Legal Services and the Director, Clinical Legal Services to assist on legal matters, and represent CAMH’s interests with relevant community partners and stakeholders.
As a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario, you have a minimum of 3 years of legal work experience, primarily in litigation and ideally in a health law context. Familiarity with public hospitals and civil mental health law is essential. Litigation experience before other administrative tribunals (Ontario Review Board, health regulatory Colleges, and/or the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal) is considered an asset.
Your communication skills must be excellent (oral and written) and you must have strong interpersonal, negotiation and presentation skills. Excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy are essential to this role.
For a dynamic legal career at a leading health care institution, please apply in writing, outlining your interest and qualifications.
