Shkaabe Makwa at CAMH is the first hospital-based Centre in Canada designed to drive culturally- responsive systems initiatives to achieve health justice and wellness for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and service providers across Ontario. Through the implementation of wise practices, evidence-based models, trauma-informed interventions, and the advancement of research, Shkaabe Makwa strives to transform health outcomes which harmonize traditional knowledge and medical expertise.
Position description and responsibilities:
Shkaabe Makwa is seeking a First Nation, Inuit, or Métis individual with computer skills and project coordination experience for a full-time, temporary (until April 20, 2026) Project Coordinator. Reporting to the Manager, Operations, the Project Coordinator is a key member of the Operations team, coordinating events and initiatives that support the effective functioning of Shkaabe Makwa. The successful candidate will participate in a range of project committees and working groups, providing secretariat support and keeping projects on track in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must possess the ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, have excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills as well as the ability to multi-task.
A key aspect of this role involves coordinating events that raise awareness of the work that Shkaabe Makwa is advancing such as the annual Pow Wow and Open Houses. Other duties include coordinating quality improvement activities to strengthen the processes and practices of the Centre. The successful candidate will work alongside the Manager, Operations to assist with the development and execution of strategies to foster meaningful engagement with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities, agencies, and organizations across Shkaabe Makwa and CAMH overall, including through the development of relationship agreements. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for creating content as well as supporting and monitoring Shkaabe Makwa social media channels. The incumbent will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements.
This position is located at 60 White Squirrel Way. This role may also require occasional travel within Ontario and some evening hours.
This position requires the incumbent to be First Nations, Inuit or Métis with demonstrated community connections. The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Health Services, Social Sciences, Health Administration, Public Health, or Education with three (3) years’ related experience working in Ontario’s mental health and addiction system. The successful candidate will have excellent organization, communication, networking, and presentation skills, along with high computer proficiency. The candidate will also require the ability to work effectively in a wide-range of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds and program areas within CAMH.
The candidate will have demonstrated experience developing and supporting the implementation of project plans and processes, analytical problem solving, and prioritizing project needs. The successful candidate will also have experience working with external stakeholders, including hospitals, First Nations education Institutes, colleges, universities and government agencies. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple aspects of work simultaneously, work independently, as well as with a diverse team.
Bilingualism (French/English) and/or the ability to speak an Indigenous language is considered an asset. Strong PC software skills including experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, WebEx, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel), Internet Search and an ability to learn new programs quickly is required.
