Registered Nurse - Forensic General Rehabilitation Unit C-camh

The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a part-time, temporary (1 year) Registered Nurse to work on the Forensic General Rehabilitation Unit C (LGUC). As a member of an inter-professional team, you will provide client-centered psychiatric and general nursing care. In addition, you will ensure the security and safety of the inpatient unit, and practice in accordance with the CNO standards, CAMH Policies and Practice Model, and the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice. Using a primary nursing model, you will be expected to perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the inter-professional plan of client-care for those who may be suffering from mental illness and who have been found Not Criminally Responsible under the Criminal Code of Canada or involved in varying stages of the criminal justice system. You will be expected to utilize critical thinking, perform risk assessments, apply risk management principles, a problem solving process and customer service in your approach to care and service delivery. You will be able to work with clients from diverse populations; contribute to program development; participate in clinical supervision; provide education support and supervision to students and participate in the research activities of the program. Your skills include the ability to make behavioral observations, mental status and physical assessments, monitoring patient’s response to pharmaceutical and care interventions, maintaining security standards, documentation and ongoing communication with other team members. This position requires a clear understanding of how to develop and implement forensic assessment plans and a fundamental understanding of the forensic legal and mental health care systems. You will have sound knowledge of crisis intervention, addiction issues, trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented approaches, forensic psychiatry, risk assessments, culturally competent care, as well as severe and persistent mental illness. Your strengths include an ability to perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate inter-professional client-centered care plans. This position involves 12 hour shift rotation and weekend work. This position is located at the Queen Street Site.

The successful candidate must be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate is also required. Preference will be given to candidates who possess, or are currently pursuing a B.Sc.N and CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to develop the Nurse- Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse inter-professional team. Effective leadership, decision-making, organizational and problem solving skills are required. You have demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour. Psychiatric nursing experience with individuals with mental illness is required. Knowledge of forensic risk assessments would be an asset. The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary. Computer literacy is required. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language is an asset.

Please Note: This part-time, temporary position is a 0.3 commitment, which may be subject to change as per the Collective Agreement. Additional hours may be available based on operational needs. These positions are part of the ONA Bargaining Unit.
