The Opportunity:The Director, Maintenance is responsible for monitoring the cost and effectiveness of our four shop location activities to optimize resources and prioritize spending.  This role will also focus on developing the maintenance leadership team to ensure that maintenance activities meet established targets and standards.Key Accountabilities:
Maintenance KPI Objectives
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of Challenger’s four maintenance facilities (Cambridge, London, Saint-Rémi, Abbotsford).
  • Direct priorities to the maintenance leadership to ensure 95% of Challenger’s Tractor Trailer fleet is available for dispatch 24/7.
  • Increasing revenue generation through Owner Operator maintenance services.
  • Ensure all warranty opportunities are maximized from each OEM supplier.
  • Primary resource on truck and trailer specification / build decisions and direct procurement cycles via RFP process to meet the needs of the business.
  • Ensure all facilities are operating safely and efficiently while providing the best cost reduction solutions without detriment to our fleet.
  • Ensure the maintenance department is providing exceptional customer service to our internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build a fiscally responsible annual operating budgetary framework and complete business planning to shape the success of our maintenance department.
  • Maintain vendor relationships with asset purchase, disposal, used equipment sales and lease returns.
  • Ability to make critical decisions regarding high-cost repairs, equipment lifecycle and warranty exceptions.
  • Work closely with the Leadership Team, Equipment Control and business unit leaders to adequately maintain their needs and ensure business results are met.
Departmental Operation / Processes
  • Consults with Maintenance leaders and Senior Leadership to ensure best practices are aligned with Company’s goals / visions; provides guidance to People Leaders on maintenance functions, issues, and projects.
  • Oversees Maintenance department, sets SMART goals and objectives, and design a framework for these to be met.
  • Acts as a strategic business partner across all maintenance terminals; partners with these individuals to identify and implement maintenance best practices and efficiencies.
  • Manages, coaches, and supports Maintenance leaders through effective problem solving, relationship building and motivation to achieve departmental goals while promoting a team environment.
  • Ensures that all processes have been accurately documented to allow for smoother transitions and resource allocation.
  • Ensure that the Maintenance leadership team is properly trained to perform duties and monitor progress.
  • Problem solve and provide solutions to refine and improve on departmental goals and procedures.
Various
  • Promote and lead a health and safety culture to the maintenance leadership team to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed.
  • Promote and lead the 5S program with department organization and cleanliness.
  • Understand, collaborate and strive for a solution-driven resolution with internal and external customers.
  • Actively involved in local high schools and post-secondary intuitions to promote careers in the transportation industry and build partnerships with educators and students in the trades of Truck and Coach Technician (310T), Truck Trailer Service Technician (310J), and Parts Technician (240P) 
  • Attend industry meetings and associations.
  • Performs other duties as required.
What You Need To Be Successful In This Role:
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience as a Maintenance Manager or Director in the transportation industry is required.
  • Post-secondary degree and/or coursework in Business Administration / Commerce is preferred but not essential if the candidate has the appropriate training or experience.
  • Experience in a maintenance/retail shop environment is an asset.
  • Licensed Mechanic with 310T or 310J Red Seal Certification is an asset.
  • AZ license and heavy equipment operator is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario, BC and Quebec trucking markets an asset.
  • Previous experience remotely managing employees/locations an asset.
  • Possession of a valid license and a suitable vehicle (travel required).
  • Strong business knowledge of North American transportation and fleet maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, relationship building and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to lead and coach employees to utilize their strengths and further develop themselves personally and professionally.
  • Strong attention to detail with a mechanical aptitude.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office, computer and telephone skills.
  • Creative and effective problem solving ability.
  • Strong financial and business acumen.
  • Experience with financial statements and ability to understand financial for business decision making
  • Ability to read and understand operational reports and metrics to make effective decisions.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and turn multiple sources of data in to effective information for making decisions to benefit the business.
  • Ability to work independently and also in a team environment.
  • Strong customer focus.
