The Environment section of the Parks, Forestry and Environment Division is looking for two summer students to help advance, measure and implement coordinated and cost effective environmental sustainability initiatives at the City. As part of the team, you will play a significant role in contributing to find new and innovative ways to forward environmental sustainability at the City by various methods including diverting more waste from landfill and the implementation of our circular economy roadmap. You will help obtain information around waste diversion, circular economy, reduction of single-use items and litter to help implement and measure these initiatives.
Employment Period: May 5, 2025 up to August 22, 2025
Under the supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Supervisor, the successful candidate will:
• Research, benchmark and/or support the development and delivery of environmental sustainability initiatives such as waste diversion, circular economy, single-use items reduction and litter mitigation.
• Complete waste and litter measurements (onsite work sorting waste and measuring waste/litter at parks, facilities and Business Improvement Areas).
• Populate data, compile and summarize results for all waste measurements performed.
• Assist with the development of an internal standard operating procedure and external guidebook on food prevention and diversion and expand the existing special events organic waste diversion program.
• Assist with presentation preparation and other administrative duties.
• Collaborate with internal groups and external groups to help forward environmental sustainability initiatives.
• Provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• This is a hybrid work from home and office position and a laptop will be supplied. Must come in person to the office location (300 City Centre Drive) for team meetings and field work.
• Secondary School Diploma with preference given to students in post-secondary education program in environmental studies, environmental science, geography, environmental education or related field
• Special consideration will be given to candidates that have previous, related experience in waste management and/or circular economy as well as an interest and/or experience in environmental research, audits, collaboration with stakeholders and communication.
• Excellent organization and time management skills are required.
• Excellent computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with report writing, field work and data analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, initiative/self-management and accountability, and flexibility/adaptability.
• Demonstrated ability to apply excellent customer service skills with the public and City staff.
• The position will require some flexible hours and in person days (e.g. waste and litter measurements and special event support) and will include weekends and evenings up to 35 hours per week. In person activities dependent on public health restrictions.
• Must have a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and an excellent driving record.
• Some heavy lifting will be required (30-50lb work-related equipment).
Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.22 - 22.84
