SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Person who participates in the identification of the needs of the population and implements the various community action programs. They act as a resource person for individuals or groups.

The person will work directly with the elders' home residents to ensure their participation in meaningful indoors and outdoors activities. They will participate in identifying the needs of the residents and use the appropriate techniques to implement cultural programs and activities. They will design, coordinate, update and implement activities that are meaningful for the residents and promote their well-being. They will act as a resource person for the Cree culture within the Elders' home.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS* Acts as leader and is responsible for the activities within the Elders' home;* Partners with the Nishiiyuu department in his/her endeavor;* Knows the residents - their strengths, their interests, their needs, their life history;* Shows creative mindset to offer activities related to residents' interests and needs;* Promotes Cree Culture within the Elders' home;* Designs and implements activity program for the residents to meet their needs integrating Cree culture and other elements meaningful for them;* Creates reference documents and tools to support the Elders' home team in encouraging residents' participation in cultural activities;* Writes notes and reports when needed;* Reaches out to community and Elders of the community to collaborate and work on cultural activities offered at the Elders' home;* Meet with representatives of organizations and services in the community to develop a committee to work on improving residents' participation in cultural activities;* Collaborates closely with partners and professionals to adapt activities to residents' needs;* Participates in meetings and orientation tables, depending on the request;
* Participates in intervention plans and in intervention plan meetings;* Supports Beneficiary attendants to do activities with the residents;* Collaborates with the Elders' home community worker for family activities;* Observes confidentiality at all times;* Collaborates with his/her supervisor and the Elders' home team;* Carries out other tasks usually assigned to this position upon the request of her/his supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS
Education:

  • Must have a college diploma (DEC) in technique of social work or other relevant college discipline of a recognized school by the competent ministry.
  • This job also includes the person who, hold a certificate of college studies in Social Work Techniques or Social Assistance Techniques.
  • Applicants with an attestation of college studies in Educators in Native Childcare Services or Special Needs Education aboriginal and Inuit children may be considered.
  • Completed Charlie Training or is willing to follow the training.
  • Completed PCFI Training or is willing to follow the training.

Experience:

  • Two (2) year of pertinent experience.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of Eenou/Eeyou (Cree) culture, values, traditions and teachings into programming;
  • Knowledge of First Nation health/social service models, trends and issues is an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience elderly care;
  • Knowledge of appropriate ways to handle intervention with behaviors related to Dementia symptoms;
  • Knowledge of the issues and context surrounding elders and family development in First Nation northern communities;
  • Experience working with individuals, families and community organizations;
  • Ability in the identification and analysis of the clientele needs;
  • Demonstrated experience in adapting and implementing activities for the clients;
  • Leadership skills in working with individuals and groups;
  • Autonomous and flexible;
  • Practical, proactive and attentive to detail;
  • Planning skills;
  • Well organized;
  • Teamwork capabilities;
  • Ability to work in a team and to establish harmonious interpersonal and interprofessional relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;

LANGUAGE* Fluent in Cree and in English.

OTHER* Possibility of assignments during weekends (for example pow wow, etc.)* Possibility of having 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM schedule (as per residents' routine)
