Chaplain & Spiritual Care Practitioner

Candidates are invited to apply for the full-time position of Chaplain & Spiritual Care Practitioner at our 193-bed long-term care home located in Ottawa, Ontario, Extendicare Medex.

Applicants must be willing to work some irregular hours, evenings and weekends.

The Chaplain & Spiritual Care Practitioner acts as a supporting role to the residents and staff to meet the religious and spiritual needs and offer end of life spiritual care. As a Chaplain you will have the ability to build relationships with residents, families, volunteers, and staff. You understand the complexity of bio-ethical issues and work effectively within the care team. In this position, it is essential to appreciate and be able to lead a variety of faith traditions in our multicultural home.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Functioning in a multi-faith environment the Chaplain & Spiritual Care Practitioner assesses the spiritual and religious care needs, provides direct spiritual support and religious care to residents, families and staff members at Medex LTC, ensures access to spiritual, religious and cultural practices/rituals as appropriate or requested.
  • Provides spiritual care and supportive counseling to residents, family and staff and or makes appropriate referrals to other members or the inter-professional team or community partners.
  • Ability to lead prayer groups, study groups, church services, plan celebrations and holy days for all faiths represented.
  • Participates in special bereavement functions such as home wide memorial services.
  • Documentation skills for care planning, goal setting, participation and progress note support.
  • To coordinate, select, orient, and evaluate other pastoral service providers for the facility.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Proof of successful completion of a degree or diploma preferred in Divinity/Theology, Pastoral Education or a combination of Spiritual educations.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent documentation skills
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in one-one/group program planning, implementation and evaluation for both well and the cognitively impaired.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Experience providing spiritual care in a hospital or LTC care setting considered an asset
  • Independent coverage for WSIB/Insurance
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check / VSS within 6 months
