POSITION: Registered Nurse - Clinton and Stratford Sites
Operating Room/Day Surgery/Endoscopy & PACU
Job Share (7.5 hour shifts)
Position Summary: The job share Registered Nurse is a key member of the inter-professional team who will also assume the charge nurse role as required. Using the Collaborative Care Model and evidence-based practice, they will assist in a team approach with the coordination and supervision of care to patients and their families. When assuming the Charge Nurse role, the RN will appropriately assign patient care in accordance with the needs of the patients and the knowledge, skills and ability of the staff. The RN will focus on and assume a leadership role in discharge planning, patient access/flow and patient navigation across the perioperative period. This position will also include a focus on cataracts, endoscopy & local procedures. The RN will work closely with Medical Device and Reprocessing Department (MDRD) and Materials Management staff as well as the OR and PACU Team Leaders.

DATE REQUIRED: As soon as possible
SALARY: $39.07 to $56.00 per hour
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• Successful completion of a recognized Operating Room Certificate course from an approved teaching institution
• Successful completion of a recognized Peri-anaesthesia course from an approved teaching institution
• CPNC(C) - preferred
• Knowledge of ORNAC and NAPANc standards of practice
• Recent/related courses, in-services in peri-operative and peri-anaesthesia nursing
• Cardiac Rhythm interpretation course
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS-Provider) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Successful completion of process optimization education - preferred
Experience:
• Recent clinical experience (minimum two years) in either peri-operative or post-anaesthetic care (PACU) nursing required - experience in both preferred
Skills/Abilities:
• Demonstrated clinical competence in the area of Peri-operative or post-anaesthetic care (PACU) nursing - competence in both preferred
• Demonstrated leadership and coordination skills in a fast-paced environment with a commitment to safety - patient, worker and workplace. Good stewardship in the identification, reporting and mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions
• Specialized nursing skills in the following areas:
o Endoscopy procedures, equipment & trouble shooting
o Airway management and breathing support
o Haemodynamic monitoring
o 12 Lead E.C.G. Interpretation - preferred
o Physical assessment skills
o Central lines - assisting with insertion and maintenance
o Arterial lines - maintenance and withdrawal of blood
o Below the drip medication administration
o Venipuncture and IV initiation
o Fluids and electrolytes
• Demonstrated ability to lead process improvement initiatives
• Ability to return to the Stratford site within 20 minutes when on standby (accommodations available)
• Demonstrated excellence in the ability to initiate, model and support change in a constructive manner
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education
• Awareness of documentation processes and standards related to pre/intra/post-operative care
• Demonstrated commitment to HPHA’s Vision, Mission, Values, Priorities, Commitment to Community and Accountability Framework
• Demonstrated ability to prepare equipment for endoscopic and surgical procedures
• Demonstrated ability to support endoscopic and surgical procedures
• Demonstrated excellence in communication - (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families and healthcare providers
• Knowledge of Senior Friendly Hospital initiatives and their application in the clinical setting
• Demonstrated strong customer service and patient/family-centred skills
• Demonstrated ability to deal with crisis/conflicts and implement resolution strategies
• Demonstrated ability to perform, coach and mentor staff in program-specific skills related to peri-operative nursing
• Ability to plan, organize, problem-solve, oversee and support the activities of self and unit staff
• Effective time management skills and ability to deal with and provide direction in a fast-paced environment
• Computer literate with a working knowledge of Meditech information system, and Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Regular attendance and punctuality is a requirement of the position
