The Data & Analytics team at Loblaw is hiring a Data Engineer II with experience in building cloud-based modern data platforms from the ground up. Reporting to the Director - Data Engineering, the incumbent will be responsible for ingesting, wrangling, cleansing and delivering data to power our Analytics, BI and ML/AI capabilities. The successful candidate will be passionate about data and have a strong foundation of data management concepts and engineering best practices.
What You'll Do:
Build and maintain batch and real-time data pipelines.
Build and maintain an API gateway to manage integration points between the data platform and other applications and data consumers.
Build end-to-end processes supporting data ingestion, data transformations, data wrangling, data cleansing and data delivery.
Explore opportunities for optimization of existing data pipelines and re-designing of data infrastructure for greater scalability and performance.
Build and maintain a repository of metadata and lineage information about how data flows through its lifecycle.
Assist with data-related technical challenges and perform root-cause analysis to answer specific business questions and recommend and implementing ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.
Contributes to the development and documentation of data management standards framework.
Mentor and cross-train junior data engineers.
What You'll Bring:
University degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related field.
5+ years of software engineering experience with strong focus on data.
5+ years of relevant OO programming experience using Java and Python.
Experience working with Cloud data platforms technologies: Google Cloud Platform (Dataflow, Big Query, Apache Beam, Apache Airflow)
Experience using Gitlab to configure and build CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with relational databases (Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server) and big data technologies (Hadoop, Hive)
Advanced knowledge of SQL queries
Superb analytical and conceptual thinking skills; to not only manipulate but also derive meaningful interpretations from data
Ability to take initiative, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
Capability to liaise with all levels across the enterprise on projects and ad-hoc requests
Strong detail orientation is essential in this role
