Why is this role important?
Reporting to the Director, Customs Compliance, this role will be a part of our industry leading Customs Compliance team that navigates the ins and outs of product importation into the United States (US). The primary objective for this role is to comply with all US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations to minimize costs and risk to the Company. This role will be responsible for supporting our company’s HTS Code Database as well as support our dedicated Customs Broker to address any day-to-day business needs to ensure Customs clearance operations run smoothly. This role will provide the opportunity to combine your technical, auditing and people skills to support the Enterprise on risk related matters with a focus on US Customs Compliance. You will join a dedicated and motivated team with exposure to industries within the Loblaw enterprise including grocery retail, pharmaceutical, home & entertainment and apparel.
What you’ll do?
- Provide support as a dedicated resource for US customs compliance
- Review all requirements to enable compliant customs activities in the United States while respecting internal processes and regulations in force (USMCA certificates of origin, tariff classification, assigning duty rates - including 301 Tariffs, conduct regular reviews and audit transactions for completeness, etc.)
- Support day-to-day US import & export compliance operations
- Research product literature to determine proper HTS Codes with due regard to business risks
- Ensure compliance with Participating Government Agent (PGA) data element requirements to enable compliant declarations (FDA, USDA, APHIS, Permits, etc.)
- Analyze and interpret requirements for compliance as they relate to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations
- Support departmental audits that meet government, corporate and Internal Audit standards
- Responsible for projects or initiatives as required
What we’re looking for?
- Current US CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) designation in good standing
- 3-5 years’ experience in a Customs environment
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate strong working relationships in a team environment is a must
- Strong technical skills in the field of Canadian/US Customs Export Compliance
- Demonstrates a practical and informed understanding of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) regulations as well as Participating Government Agency (PGA) code assignment to support timely US Customs Clearance activities.
- Strong Microsoft Office (365) Skills
- Proficiency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese is considered an asset
