Extern Mentor Coodinator - Temporary Full Time

The Extern Mentor Coordinator (EMC) is responsible for supporting Externs’ practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards. The EMC will establish structure for ongoing extern and practice area support (e.g. Debriefs, check-ins, ongoing education). The EMC will also act as a resource in helping Externs understand their scope of practice, and support practice where required to help deliver high quality care for patients and families. The EMC will also report overall program implementation and evaluation.

Contribute to safe, quality care by

  • Support Integration and onboarding of all externs at the organizational and unit level
  • Create, adapt and deliver orientation and learning resources
  • Support Extern scheduling and departmental assignment
  • Aid in integration of team processes and role clarity
  • Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills and competencies
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of Extern role
  • Provide mentorship, education and professional development of the externs
  • Serve as liaison between unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations

What must you have?

  • Regulated Healthcare Professional with good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario and/or College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO)
  • 2-3 years acute care experience required
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

  • Proven attendance record.
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies,
  • Outstanding communication skills,
  • Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or precepting,
  • Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor, and
  • Demonstrated leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrates understanding of infection prevention and control practices
  • Demonstrates conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrates computer literacy
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and clients within a challenging and exciting health care environment.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others.
