Director, North America Segment Management, Global ALM

The Global Asset Liability Management (GALM) team plays a leadership role in the identification and management of asset/liability risks for the global general accounts of Manulife and John Hancock. Within GALM, the mandate of the North America Segment Management team is to support ALM risk management, implement both long term and tactical ALM strategies, and support balance sheet optimization within the constraints of tax, capital, liquidity, accounting and reserving, for the Canadian and US Segments.

Reporting to the AVP, North America Segment Management, this incumbent’s primary responsibility will be to coordinate and lead balance sheet management activities for US Segments, with opportunities to support activities in other geographies. This includes asset strategy implementation, risk management, balance sheet analysis and optimization. In addition, this incumbent will provide ALM support to cross functional projects and initiatives to meet the company’s business goals and financial objectives.

The position provides the challenging opportunity for interacting with many business partners in the US Segment business units, as well as Investments, Group, Finance, Capital, and Risk teams. You will also gain an understanding of the many types of investments and business activities across the company.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Implement and monitor approved investment strategies in liability segments
  • Manage regular policy cash flow settlements and top-up/top-down for liability segments
  • Work closely with the Reporting and Analysis team in ALM to analyze and monitor asset positions relative to target mix and benchmark limits, and prepare regular reports to the Segment Asset Liability Committee, and other business partners
  • Support the proposal and execution of strategies to manage the company’s interest rate and spread risks
  • Monitor, develop and execute hedging plans for CPI risks in the US LTC business
  • Support and optimize the IFRS9 hedge accounting programs, and represent ALM in various IFRS hedge accounting working groups
  • Support and optimize the NAIC hedge accounting programs
  • Develop an understanding of tax, capital, liquidity, accounting and reserving in order to contribute to the balance sheet management solutions
  • Act as ALM’s main contact for US segment inquiries and problem resolution
  • Manage additional projects and ad-hoc requests as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or certification required, with a background in Investments, Risk Management or Actuarial
  • 5+ years of experience in the financial services or investment risk management environment
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical and problem solving ability
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership capabilities applied within team settings and with individual contributors
  • Ability to respond to changing demands from multiple stakeholders and prioritize needs while working under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively across various disciplines (Investment, Actuarial, Capital, Accounting and Risk)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FSA or CFA is an advantage
  • Knowledge of interest rate and FX derivatives is an advantage
  • Knowledge of insurance liabilities, especially in the US market, is an advantage

Salary range is expected to be between

$103,050.00 CAD - $185,490.00 CAD
