We are seeking an inspiring Director of Engineering, who is forward-thinking, is obsessed with delivering value, and builds high performance teams, and is excited to deliver successful implementations of our products, patterns, and frameworks.

As a Director of Engineering, you will:

  • Lead multi-functional engineering teams, dedicated to building and supporting Bank Technology Platforms.
  • Deliver an exceptional user experience through the delivery of new capabilities and functionality with approved architectural designs, while keeping end to end service design principles in mind.
  • Build and maintain target state roadmaps and support the products/assets of your teams with accountability for the delivery of new functionality and for production reliability (Level 3 support).
  • Foster a high-performance engineering culture that embodies Manulife’s values. Guide and motivate the staff within your team, and focus on team engagement.
  • Manage budgets, govern vendors, and manage vendor delivery in support of meeting the Bank Technology team’s objectives and goals.
  • Be a local brand ambassador to establish Manulife as a destination for top technology talent.

You bring and will continuously build upon the following skills:

  • Hybrid 3 days a week in the office. Should the role be based in Toronto 1 of the 3 days will involve travel to the Waterloo office
  • 10+ years proven experience leading teams and delivering large scale programs, preferably in the Banking or Technology industry
  • A demonstrated passion for engineering and delivery, supported by a deep background in modern software development including agile delivery and DevSecOps principles, test-driven development, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new features
  • Exceptional experience building the careers of staff within your organization and hiring top talent
  • Strong project management experience (planning, estimation, building roadmaps etc)
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of banking or financial services in support of our service or product offerings (or are ready to learn by doing!)
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a ‘get it done right’ attitude; you will embrace the challenge of changing the engineering culture of a business
  • A capacity for constant learning from both success and failure, remaining open to change and continuous improvement
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities that enable you to manage through creativity and optimization
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication with the ability to effectively articulate and communicate technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes across all levels in the organization
  • Demonstrated understanding of how technology supports business strategy and a strong bias towards collaboration with your peers and business partners.

Your team(s) work with the following technologies:

  • Vendor supplied Core Banking platform and supporting ecosystem of capabilities deployed on AIX / Linux
  • Languages such as Java or Kotlin (using the Springboot framework), C# /.NET, React / NodeJS
  • Open source! As we accelerate our delivery of world-class experiences, we know embracing open source technologies will help us get there.
  • Legacy technologies such as IBM Websphere and Portal
  • Batch on-prem and supported by Oracle databases
  • Azure Cloud using the various capabilities therein across container orchestration, PAAS databases, Event driven systems (EDA) such as Azure Service Bus, Functions where needed, Microsoft Power Platform, and so on.
  • Automation platforms that may demonstrate low code platforms, including orchestration and AI opportunities therein.

Salary range is expected to be between

$110,530.00 CAD - $205,270.00 CAD
