Counsel, Legal Services
Maple Reinders Group seeks a full-time, talented, energetic counsel to join the Legal Services group, working with and reporting to the General Counsel to provide support to all aspects of the company’s business, including project procurement, contract management, construction liens, and construction claims management.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
As a member of the Legal Services group, your duties will include the following:
- Assist in the direction of legal services for the Canadian construction operations.
- Providing advice on a broad range of legal issues, including corporate, commercial, construction, employment, human rights, privacy, banking, bonding, builders’ liens, insurance, real estate, intellectual property, health & safety and environmental issues.
- Assist in the administration and management of various litigation files and developing and implementing strategies and solutions to mitigate risks.
- Prepare, review, comment and negotiate tender documentation, proposals and draft contracts, as well as other relevant legal documentation, for local and national projects in a variety of sectors and delivery methods.
- Provide legal advice and opinions, and contribute to risk and commercial issues analysis.
- Work directly with internal and external stakeholders, including public sector and private clients, partners, subtrades and suppliers.
- Consulting, working with and managing external counsel as required.
- Developing and delivering internal training on legal issues.
- Assume other activities and responsibilities as required.
- Some travel may be required.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
- Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws degree from an accredited Canadian University, and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- 3 - 5 years’ experience in construction and/or commercial law at a major corporation or law firm.
- Knowledge and experience:
- relating to construction legislation (liens and prompt payment), litigation, bonding and insurance in areas where Maple Reinders does work;
- in the administration, conduct and management of litigation and alternative dispute resolution; and,
- in identifying performance/risk issues, and understanding, drafting, reviewing and negotiating project & construction agreements (including standard form contracts, prime contracts, subcontracts, partnership agreements, joint ventures, etc.).
- Experience and an understanding of the complex risk-transfer on alternative delivery projects would be an asset.
- Ability to interact with a large, diverse and multi-party team and manage files independently.
- Creative, confident and decisive.
- Excellent organizational, administration and interpersonal skills, as well as a solid work ethic.
- Above average written and verbal communication skills are required.
