Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Architect, the Solution Architect is responsible for discovering and helping implement innovative digital solutions to enable Medavie to compete in a fast paced, always changing digital world.


Candidate must be able to architect secure, always-on, internet-scale solutions utilizing concepts such as multi- cloud strategies, containerization, auto-scaling and failover, micro-services and server less applications where appropriate. Working closely with the Chief Architect, as well as, the projects Application Architect, applications team leads and Technical Services Architects, the successful candidate must be able to create secure, automated enterprise class solutions that move Medavie forward in the digital world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading Kubernetes adoption. Medavie is moving to “infrastructure as code” as a core automation principle, and this position will be responsible for leading the adoption of Kubernetes, defining the architecture for Kubernetes, and leading the move from Docker Swarm to Kubernetes for container orchestration.

  • Bootstrapping the adoption of new technologies - For example, when Medavie decided to adopt Docker and Kubernetes, an architect not only researched and chose these technologies, but learned to use them, created sample projects and guidelines, coached and led technical teams in their adoption of these technologies.

  • Suggesting digital solutions to corporate needs - For example, maybe we need a new “payroll system”, or a “corporate social responsibility system”. Find out what our needs are (and will be). Find out what’s out there. How does it integrate with our existing systems. Does it meet our security standards. Research, a little planning, some relationship building, general technical know how. Does it offer innovative features that move us forward?

  • Continuously improve the corporate architecture. Be aware of architecture trends and best practices and help Medavie incorporate industry innovations and best practices. Help us adopt OCR, AI, Robotic Process Automation, Machine Learning, where and when appropriate. Help us better adopt dev-ops.

  • Respond to Request for Proposal’s (RFP) by writing the technical portions of responses. Requires excellent communication skills, and a wide range of technical knowledge.


Required Qualifications:
Education: Post secondary bachelor degree in computer science, business, or related field
Experience: 7+ Years of relevant experience.

Relevant Skills:

  • Strong ability in more than one of java or node.js, plus knowledge of related technologies such as spring boot, rest apis

  • Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes, as well as git and CI/CD pipelines

  • Experience with various database paradigms and best practices involving relational and nosql databases

  • Experience designing and architecting multi-tier, distributed, clustered systems.

  • Experience working in agile/scrum based projects

  • Experience securing all components of a system

  • Excellent communication skills

Language: English, written and spoken. Bilingualism is considered an asset

Security Clearance: In conjunction with our contract with the Federal Government, you will be required to have Reliability Status Clearance (Enhanced Level B) through the Public Works and Government Services Canada Department prior to your first day. This includes; Fingerprinting, Criminal Record Check and Credit Check.

  • Technical Leadership: Researches and understands where key technologies are headed. Raises awareness of possibly disruptive technologies to our business model. Determine which emerging technologies can give Medavie a competitive advantage, and define and communicate action plans to adopt and utilize these technologies.
