The PCP provides immediate treatment and transportation of sick and injured individuals to appropriate medical facilities. Due to the nature of operating in the public eye, a high level of professionalism, communication, and knowledge is always expected. The paramedic is required to conduct themselves in a safe and discreet manner, with the responsibility of conduct justification to patients, family members, hospitals staff, management, public agencies, legal court, and more. As an employee of MHS, you are accountable to our patients, coworkers, and management by supporting all safety-related initiatives, as well as fostering a culture that focuses on patient safety and a safe workplace.

DUTIES AND TASKS

Emergency and Response

  • Maintain personal knowledge and skills, in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile (AOCP), to deliver optimum patient care.

  • Safely operate MHS - West vehicles in accordance with MHS - West Health and Safety Manual, Operational Guidelines, and all provincial and federal regulations.

  • Stocks and maintains vehicles in a state of readiness at all times.

  • Work in hazardous environments to ensure the safety and stabilization of the patient.

  • Work with outside agencies as a team in a coordinated effort on behalf of the patient.

  • Document all patient care, assessments, and skills, within the patient care report in a timely and legible fashion.

  • Punctual and ready to respond at the start of their shift.

  • Act in a professional manner and handle conflict situations with good judgment.

  • Follow the MHS - West chain of command.

Communication

  • Create and maintain fully completed patient care reports. (ePCRs).

  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with all provincial and federal regulations.

  • Refer all media requests to the General Manager of MHS - West.

  • Report all incidents and complete written incident report forms to Director of MHS - West or designate.

Education

  • Develop and provide continuing educational requirements as required by the Alberta College of Paramedics

  • Maintains functional awareness of MHS - West Operational Guidelines, and AHS medical control guidelines.

  • Participates actively in MHS - West Quality Assurance Program.

  • Develop a plan for maintaining and improving self-directed professional growth.

Physical Ability

  • Must be in good physical health with no disabilities that will impair duties as a Paramedic.

  • Considerable lifting and movement of heavy patients.

  • Will need to extricate patients from hazardous environments.

  • Will advise director, and/or team leader, of injuries that will impair duties.

Public Relations

  • Actively participates in public awareness and community education programs approved by MHS - West.

  • Maintains professional appearance of the approved uniform, and maintains hygienic and grooming standards.

Safety Hazards

  • Exposure to Violent Behaviour

  • Traffic Hazards

  • Communicable Diseases

  • Invasive medical devices. (i.e. IV needles)

  • Extreme Weather Conditions

  • Work with present considerable hazards

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Alberta Operators License class 1, 2 or 4.

Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics

Current registration with the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics, if applying to Lloydminster Positions

Completion of Alberta Health Services MCP’s

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

Certified in and maintains CPR certification

Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics

Current registration with the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics (Lloydminster only)
