Job Summary

Salary Pending Review

Reporting to the a leader on the financial management and planning team, the Financial Assistant is responsible for providing financial analysis and support to corporate reporting, budget, and/or program financial support teams.

Education
  • Completion of grade 12
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in accounting or finance and/or a CPA designation.
Knowledge
  • Experience in accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, procurement and/or

process review is an asset

  • Experience with Public Sector Accounting (PSA) and not-for-profit accounting standards is an asset
  • Knowledge of external regulations, such as the Municipal Act, the CICA/PSAB Handbook, and all other regulations impacting the accounting and reporting of municipalities.
  • Completion of the municipal accounting and finance program would be an asset
ResponsibilitiesFulfills monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc requests for internal and external financial reporting and planning (90% of time).
  • Identifying financial reporting needs, reviewing for accuracy, evaluating estimates, performing analytical review and following up on unusual results.
  • Preparation of reconciliations and ensuring accuracy of journal entries, and completeness.
  • Prepares and maintains financial information by following standard operating procedures to complete monthly and quarterly tasks to record financial transactions.
  • Preparing components of audited consolidated financial statements including reconciliations to ledger and related note disclosure and analytical review.
  • Assisting with preparation of quarterly reports, variance analysis and discussing with lines of business and financial management team.
  • Researching and summarizing PSAB changes, analyzing and critically evaluating accounting policy options and alternatives including impacts on financial results and an implementation plan.
  • Reporting on capital changes and depreciation in the financial information returns, review for completeness.
  • Preparing and analyzing special purpose statements for ministry funded programs.
  • Provides support in the budget preparation and budget to actual analysis.
  • Creates or maintains procedure documentation as required.

Leads and/or participates in special projects as assigned (10% of time).
  • Provide support and data gathering and analysis for special projects and initiatives

Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.

Special Requirements
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary program
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.
