Job Description
JOB SUMMARY

The Community Mental Health (MH) Nurse provides services in health promotion, health protection and disease treatment related to mental health support and liaison for individuals and their caregivers with mental health disorders, guided by Ontario Mental Health Act and the College of Nurses of Ontario standards.

The Community MH Nurse combines knowledge from mental health, social and nursing sciences in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of mental health programs and services. Services are provided through clinical settings, and/or home/community visits, agency liaison and collaboration. The Community MH Nurse works according to program specific plans, policies and procedures of Niagara Region Public Health.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BScN) is required
  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • An additional post-graduate certificate in Psychiatric Nursing is preferred
  • Current certificate in CPR

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in psychiatric nursing in a psychiatric setting
  • Community psychiatric or community health experience preferred
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control interventions

SKILLS
  • Requires an ability to communicate effectively with the public and other professionals
  • Computer literacy is required
  • French language skills an asset

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must provide own transportation and be able to travel throughout the Niagara Region to other offices, work locations, or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons. Employees who use their personal vehicles for approved Region business shall ensure they are adequately insured with their personal insurance carrier. It is the employee's responsibility to possess and maintain a valid driver's license of the appropriate class to carry out their job in accordance with Corporate Policy.
  • Support clients in their travel to locations in the community when it is relevant to the client’s recovery plan as per program policy (which allows the option of staff transporting clients in their personal vehicle)
  • In accordance with Corporate Criminal Records Check policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records check, including vulnerable sector screening, and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate prior to commencing employment
  • Be available to work flexible hours including weekend and/or evening hours as required
  • Vaccinations as recommended in Public Health policy
  • Must complete the anaphylaxis response training annually
