NOTE: This position requires 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. There is a requirement to be on-call once a month on a rotational basis.

What can I expect to do in this role?• Perform regular preventive maintenance and inspections on equipment and various mechanical operating systems including furnace systems, air conditioning systems, etc.
• Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment while performing duties
• Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas
• Complete all necessary reports and records related to repairs, maintenance, inspections and incidents.
• Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain various electrical components, appliances and equipment in accordance with pertinent codes, in a timely manner
How do I qualify?Mandatory• You have job required certification in one of the skilled trades by the designated ministry of the Ontario government or equivalent experience.
• You are First Aid and Heart Saver certified or can obtain these upon hire.
Technical Expertise• You have strong expertise in a recognized skilled trade and working knowledge of other skilled trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, welding, etc.) to perform a range of repairs, renovations, and participate in other related projects.
• You know how to work within applicable legislation, regulations (e.g., Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act) and practices to ensure safety protocols are followed and safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
• You can perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks (e.g., painting, carpentry, welding, lock repair and HVAC maintenance).
• You can operate and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and fire systems, as well as instrumentation and control systems.
Communication Skills• You have oral communication skill to discuss work projects with other trades people, liaise with correctional staff, and ensure work in completed in a timely manner.
You have written communication skills to draft reports and maintain accurate logs.
• You can provide instructions in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools.
• You can review information on warranty and service agreements to prepare reports and respond to inquiries.
Analytical Skills• You possess analytical skills to provide input into reports, recognize workplace hazards and security breaches in order to take prompt corrective action.
• You can review information on automated systems and perform quality assurance checks.
• You can interpret, organize, and complete blueprints, schematics, specification diagrams and drawings.
Computer Skills• You are proficient with computer applications and computer systems for monitoring automated systems (e.g., mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and fence security monitors, closed circuit TV, etc.).
