Description
The Senior Manager, Corporate Finance is responsible for managing the accounting operations, including Procure-to-pay business cycle, Treasury, and period-end close process. This role is also accountable for the integrity of the financial data by establishing effective internal controls over key business and reporting cycles, financial systems (e.g., general ledger), and acting as a steward of data and information that supports financial, management and regulatory reporting. This role also oversees financial administration of the international offices.

What you'll doAccounting Operations & Treasury Management
Manage Corporate Finance team’s annual workplans, organize accountabilities and deliverables to ensure adherence to deadlines and timely outcomes
Oversee the procure-to-pay process for OTPP Toronto and its global offices, including employee expenses and corporate credit card arrangements; working closely with OTPP’s Strategic Sourcing/Procurement function;and accountability for the corporate expense policies and guidelines.
Lead period-end close activities (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual) including journal entries, account reconciliations, balance sheet accounting (e.g., fixed assets, prepaids, accrual)
Steward over financial data and information - support various finance teams (e.g., Financial Reporting & Internal Controls, Management Reporting & Planning, Strategic Enterprise Planning, Procurement) and other divisions as required, by providing timely, complete, and accurate financial data/information to support financial, regulatory and management reporting
Accountable for treasury management over OTPP’s administrative bank accounts, including multi-currency cash flow needs for international operating entities
Responsible for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of commodity tax filings in partnership with internal and external tax advisors
Responsible for supporting the procurement of insurance coverage for various risks across the plan in partnership with subject matter experts
Manage and monitor roboust internal controls over accounting processes, treasury operations, financial systems, data accuracy and completeness; support the internal and external audits for the department
Assess, prioritize, and implement efficiency and effectiveness opportunities for processes, internal controls, financial systems, and tools, ensure implementation of best practices, continuously reviewing processes and modifying or re-engineering where applicable.
Financial Data & Systems
Working closely with Data & Analytics teams at OTPP, accountable for establishing and monitoring a governance framework over financial data integrity (i.e., general ledger data), including effective and efficient data integration techniques, and straight-through processing between financial and reporting systems and tools
Act as a direct business owner of the general ledger system - actively engage with:
OTPP IT support team to help make prioritization decisions for maintenance and continuous improvements (e.g., system upgrades, new functionality, new use cases, etc.)
general ledger vendor and user groups to enhance self and team’s knowledge of best practices, capabilities, optimization, and continuous improvements
Current on finance technology trends, review and assess new technologies to ensure that the enterprise is using the tools available most effective and efficiently and suggest new potential tools
Oversee business cases and projects related the financial data, general ledger, and other finance tools, to improve efficiency and effectiveness of finance operations, manage risks and maximize automation; looks for opportunities to leverage data tools (e.g., Alteryx, Power BI) to help automate production of reports, rationalize static, spreadsheet-based reports, etc.
Financial Administration - International Offices
Accountable for financial administration support of/for the international offices, including but not limited to: cash flow management, regulatory reporting & filings, managing the office operations (e.g., bank accounts set up and maintenance, payables/employee expenses/travel policies and guidelines, credit cards set up and processing, invoice processing,
Responsible for accurate and complete financial data/information provided to international offices auditors as required, for mid-year and year-end financial reporting and integrity of data for tax provisions and regulatory filings in foreign jurisdictions
Support any new office openings - working with the steering committee, senior management at OTPP Toronto and global offices to efficiency and effectiveness stand-up financial administration/support function
Special projects
Initiate, lead and manage process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of processes, internal controls, finance systems and tools
Support the execution of special projects by researching requirements, analyzing alternative solutions, assessing impacts to risks and processes, to provide a recommended course of action
Management accountability
The Senior Manager will be responsible for creating, managing, and monitoring departmental workplans, organize accountabilities, deliverables, ensure adherence to deadlines and timely outcomes to continuously improve team performance and value creation
The individual must possess strong people leadership skills to direct and influence the efforts of others, and strong communication skills (e.g., able to translate enterprise/divisional objectives into team’s activities), and deploy change management best practices, when required
Manage performance, development and mentoring of staff; help identify training and on the job opportunities; enhance ongoing professional development of staff and career progression
Stay current on accounting, internal controls standards, finance technology and other finance industry developments
Stay current on the strategic direction of Teachers’ and the Finance Division to determine how best to support those strategies
Build strong relationships with internal business partners, senior leadership, and external vendors/professional services firms, to demonstrate effective partnership, collaboration and tangible advancement in trust and rapport
Decision making
This position is a direct resource to senior management and is expected to evaluate complex multi-faceted accounting and finance problems and provide advice and guidance through well researched and thoughtful recommendations that enable effective decision making
Effective decision making will require excellent analytical skills, judgment, independent and creative thinking - ability to think through problems, assess a variety of factors, and quickly implement solutions
This position must identify opportunities and develop solutions where there is limited guidance
Possess sound risk identification skills, ability to balance risks with business needs and requirement to make timely decisions with imperfect information
Makes recommendations for changes to process, internal controls, and finance technology
What you'll need
Professional accounting designation (CPA) or equivalent
University degree with focus on business, accounting, finance
Working knowledge of accounting operations, treasury management, procure-to-pay process, financial reporting and legal entity financial statement reporting, management of financial systems, including monitoring of system controls, budgeting and planning
Proficient knowledge of accounting concepts and standards relevant to investment industry (e.g., IFRS, Canadian GAAP, Pension Plans GAAP)
A high level of tech-savviness, influencing the adoption and development of new tools and technology for reporting (e.g., Infor General Ledger, Workiva, Power BI, Alteryx), automation (e.g., RPA), data integration (e.g., Snowflake, Python)
Knowledge and advanced skills in PowerPoint, strong proficiency in Microsoft excel and word
Aptitude for finance technology, financial data management, process improvements, special projects and change management
Ability to work with internal stakeholders and balance governance and service role
8 to 12 years of experience within Finance business environment (accounting, corporate finance, financial systems/data, financial reporting)
Experience with asset management and/or financial service industry an asset
Excellent communication skills are required as this position deals with both internal and external contacts
Experience developing senior level communication and presentations
Experience leading a team including direct reports and cross functional teams
Excellent analytical ability, judgement, and independent and creative thinking to identify research and interpret information, identify solutions, make decisions and recommendations.
Successful track record delivering on process improvements projects
Proven ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, manage projects and competing deadlines, and thrive in a high-performance team environment
Professional and proactive work ethic, excellent interpersonal, and negotiation skills
Project Management experience, an asset
