Parsons Corporation has an immediate opening in our Burnaby, BC office for a Transportation Engineer to work with an exciting and progressive team on various multi-modal planning studies and road, highway, and transit projects. You will perform both conventional and moderately complex engineering assignments, applying traffic engineering fundamentals and planning techniques.
In addition to gathering, analyzing and reporting on various transportation projects, you will also be able to liaise directly with clients, stakeholders, and the public through various forums. Throughout your role, you will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of engineers, modelers, planners, and communications and engagement specialists. Often involved in fast-paced projects, you must be self-motivated, a creative thinker and quick to respond to requests and tight deadlines. Writing and editing transportation related reports, coordinating and attending stakeholder and advisory committee meetings (as well as producing related materials), and contributing to project management tasks are all part of your role.
The candidate will carry out some or all of these responsibilities, which may vary on a project-by-project basis:
- Be informed of trends and best practices in transportation and active transportation planning.
- Contributes transportation planning knowledge and leadership to the development of transportation related programs, plans and projects. Tasks may include contribution to feasibility studies, multiple account evaluations, business case development, transportation planning studies, and others.
- Contributes as a member of a team, identifying planning and project risks and opportunities based on analysis of data, trends, and issues.
- Develops and applies various analytical tools such as intersection capacity analysis software, microsimulation software, travel demand forecasting models, and data analysis software to identify issues and assess potential solutions as part of a traffic engineering or transportation planning study.
- Comfortable developing technical reports and delivering presentations for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Develops, manages and maintains relationships with multifaceted stakeholders; organizes and coordinates advisory committees.
- Demonstrates experience in project management, and public and stakeholder consultation and engagement.
- Performs other responsibilities associated with this position.
Qualifications to fulfill this role include:
- Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Traffic & Transportation Planning.
- Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to clearly present information graphically.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills required.
- Strong listening skills required with the ability to learn and help staff and stakeholders get to a common goal.
- A self-starter, comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Preferred computer skills including standard office software (Microsoft Office suite with an emphasis on Excel applications) is required. Knowledge of In-Design, Illustrator, and other planning and design related software helpful. Knowledge and experience with SharePoint is also beneficial.
- Strong abilities and experience with intersection capacity analysis software including HCS, Synchro / SimTraffic, and Arcady.
- Strong abilities and experience with microsimulation software such as Vissim, Aimsun, or TransModeler
- Strong abilities and experience in data analysis including development and use of data bases (e.g. MS Access) and GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS. Knowledge of one or more scripting languages, such as JavaScript and Python, is an asset.
- AutoCAD experience is an asset.
