Our expectations

Reporting to the Director, Asset Protection - Process and Strategy, the Advisor, Environmental
Compliance (AEC) is responsible to support the maintenance and development of the RONA's
hazardous materials and environmental compliance program for all locations in Canada. Activities
include, hazardous materials program management for store and supply chain locations; regulatory
compliance support; SDS Program management including ongoing compliance with the Globally
Harmonized System (GHS/WHMIS 2015); chemical item inventory management; and hazardous
materials vendor management.

Further, the Advisor, Environmental Compliance supports and partners with the Coordinator,
Environmental Compliance with third-party vendors in the facilitation of hazardous waste pickups, spill
management, emergency support, and PPE/supplies.

Your role

  • Develop, enhance, implement, and maintain HAZMAT/Environmental programs and policies
    to ensure compliance with government regulations and to resolve related issues as they arise
    from store, supply chain, and corporate locations.
  • Responsible for understanding and addressing Provincial and Federal level hazardous
    materials and environmental compliance regulations.
  • Work/partner with various teams within the organization including: Asset Protection & Safety,
    Legal, Merchandising, Facilities, Engineering & Construction, Real Estate, Quality Assurance,
    Public Relations, Supply Chain, and Store Communications to address issues and ensure
    company compliance with policies and procedures as well as government regulations.
  • Work with hazardous waste disposal vendor to manage hazardous waste disposal program
    for all store, supply chain, and corporate locations and ensure program compliance.
    Research, develop, and implement program issues and enhancements. Resolve vendor
    service issues. Manage and develop compliance reporting metrics.
  • Work directly with new Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Classification Vendors to properly
    classify and manage all RONA’s HAZMAT items (Approximately 17,500 current HAZMAT
    items) as well as classification of newly on-boarded items to RONA’s going forward.
    Classification system process includes item level regulatory review of guidelines set forth by
    the following agencies: Environment Canada, Occupational Health & Safety, National Fire
    Protection Agency (NFPA), as well as an individual Provincial, Federal, and Local regulatory
    reviews.
  • Provide hazardous materials program support and guidance to all store and supply chain
    locations and assists with researching issues of non-compliance, violations, and/or citations
    with regulatory officials in order to prepare formal responses to internal departments as well
    as Federal, Provincial, and/or local agencies.
  • Review and monitor hazardous waste generation rates for all store and supply chain locations
    to confirm compliance with regulatory guidelines. Track and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Support and collaborate with the Environmental Compliance Coordinator.
  • Vendor management duties that include vendor services involving hazardous waste disposal,
    Tier II bulk chemical reporting, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plans, and the
    RONA’s HAZMAT Support Line.
  • Work with internal merchandising teams to understand and develop product disposition
    guidelines.
  • Work with SDS Management vendor to ensure compliance with internal program and regulatory requirements. Assist with preparation and roll out of new program materials and
    guidelines relating to the Globally Harmonized Systems (GHS) and the Safety Data Sheets
    (SDS)

The qualifications we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, or
    equivalent/relevant studies
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a position involving health and safety, environmental compliance, or
    hazardous waste
  • Proven communication skills, both oral and written
  • Confidence speaking in front of a group
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, resourcefulness, and initiative
