What you’ll do

Position Title: SAP iXp Intern - Database Interfaces Software Developer
Location: Waterloo, ON
Internship Duration: 4 months starting January 2025

  • Develop features for our Node.js driver
  • Work on 1 or 2 major projects that will take most of the term
  • Learn about database interfaces and standards
  • Gain database programming skills
  • Build a strong foundation in relational database concepts
  • Be mentored by an experienced supervisor who wants to see you learn, grow, and succeed

Successful applicants will have an exceptional ability to learn and the motivation to excel in software design, implementation, and testing.

The following qualifications are required:

  • Programming experience in an industry standard language such as Python, Java, C/C++, Javascript, or Go
  • Enthusiastic about learning new programming languages and technologies
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Overall average of at least 80%
  • Ability to work independently

The following are not required but would be valuable:

  • Knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts
  • Experience writing database applications
  • Work experience at a software development company
  • Software design experience
  • Significant hobby programming

Meet your team

As a software developer, understanding database access is an essential skill. Almost every project you work on will involve accessing a database. Come join our Database Interfaces team and become an expert in database programming.

Our team is responsible for implementing all the programming interfaces for SAP HANA, our state of the art in-memory columnar database technology. We support many interfaces including: ODBC, JDBC, ADO.NET, Ruby and Python that make it easy for software developers to create their own ground-breaking big data and data analytics applications that harness the power of SAP HANA. We also create interfaces that allow SAP HANA to share data with other database products so customers can create hybrid database solutions.


On the Database Interfaces team, you will work under the mentorship of a senior developer to complete one or two major development projects, each of which will take a significant part of the term. Typical projects include making major functional improvements to an existing driver or driver improvements to ensure better testing, improved stability, or higher performance.


You will have tremendous day-to-day control of your project(s). You will contribute to all aspects of your project(s) including design, implementation, testing, and bug fixing and you will interact with other team members to ensure requirements like documentation and deployment are met. Over the term this broad responsibility will give you the chance to learn and practice many professional skills including time management, coding, testing, debugging, planning, communication, and interpersonal skills.

SAP provides the hourly base salary rate range applicable for the posted role. The targeted range for this position is 18.00 - 36.00 CAD. The actual amount to be offered to the successful candidates will be within that range, dependent upon the key aspects of each case which may include education, skills, experience, scope of the role, location, etc. as determined through the selection process.
