0.633 FTE School Based Counsellor Len Wood Middle School This is a continuing assignment effective February 1, 2025 School counsellors consult and plan collaboratively with students, other educators, the School Based Team, parents, community agency personnel, and other professionals in planning goals and effective strategies to promote the development of students. Consultation and direct services may focus on the students individual needs, or on the school, district, or community programs. Qualifications: A Masters degree recognized by the College of Teachers in counselling psychology or a related discipline with a focus in counselling. Valid BC Teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch. Membership in a counselling or related professional association is preferred. Teacher counsellors applying for this position should possess the following attributes: Demonstrated success as a school counsellor and ability to provide therapeutic support in a helper relationship. Experience in providing a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial, and intervention services and programs. Trauma sensitive practices; Ability to respond to critical incidents and student safety issues. Demonstrated experience in providing behavioural assessment. Demonstrated experience in case management, referral, and transition processes. Ability to team with teachers to adapt and support curriculum and coordinate services for students with behaviour and/or mental health challenges. Ability to work with school based personnel to build school capacity for supporting students with behaviour or mental health challenges. Ability to plan and coordinate student support programs within the School Based Team. Demonstrated ability in developing and assessing the required IEPs for students with special needs who have challenges specifically with behavioural or mental health needs. Current knowledge of ministry of Education Special Education category requirements. Knowledge of best practices and appropriate behavioural interventions and counselling. Comfortable working with at-risk students, their families, and interagency professionals. Successful recent experience working with students with special needs. Experience in the facilitation of referrals to community services. Demonstrated ability to work proactively with students and their families. Facilitating and presenting referrals to district itinerant staff and the District Screening committee. Proven ability to utilize information from Level C assessments to support behavioural and program planning. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in working with staff, students, and parents. Successful classroom teaching experience and excellent classroom management skills.
