INDIGENOUS STUDENT ADVISOR

1.0 FTE Permanent position

In creating a caring and nurturing school and community environment and in addressing the social, emotional and cultural needs of First Nation, Métis and Inuit students in the Simcoe County District School Board, an Indigenous Student Advisor is required. The Indigenous Student Advisor will work closely with First Nation, Métis and Inuit students, and families in SCDSB elementary schools to identify and support the social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and physical well-being of students. The Indigenous Student Advisor will be responsible for supporting student achievement and First Nation, Métis and Inuit initiatives in schools by working closely with students, teachers, families and school administrators. The position involves liaising with the board Indigenous team and providing 1-1 and small group sessions to support Indigenous student well-being and culture. Implementing IEP accommodations and behaviour plans may also be required. The Indigenous Student Advisor will prepare written reports to the Principal of Indigenous Education, attend meetings as deemed necessary, work closely under the direction of school Principals and be part of an interdisciplinary team. Planning cultural activities in conjunction with the Principal of Indigenous Education and school staff will be required.

Required Qualifications: Secondary School Diploma plus Native Education, Counsellors Training Program Diploma offered through the Native Education Counsellors Association; or Diploma in Native Education, Community and Social Development; College diploma; or University degree in Indigenous Studies; Bachelor of Social Work with a specialization in Indigenous Studies; or Child and Youth Worker diploma with adequate experience to pass demonstrated knowledge in the area. Knowledge and understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit history, culture and traditional practices. Knowledge of current political, cultural, and social awareness of issues impacting First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth. Knowledge of community and social services agencies that serve First Nation, Métis and Inuit families. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational skills. Experience with behavior management techniques and strategies, and the implementation of behavior plans. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Basis skills in various software applications, e.g. MS Office. Ability to adapt to changing situations within the workplace. This position will involve travel between SCDSB locations throughout the board.

Preferred Skills: Knowledge of Simcoe County District School Board Policies, Administrative Procedures Memoranda and Numbered Memoranda. Knowledge of conflict and/or anger management strategies. Knowledge of crisis intervention and responses. First Aid and CPR Certificate. Well-developed mediation skills. Previous experience working in an educational environment.

Due to student needs, the location of this position is subject to change during the school year and in future years.

The Indigenous Student Advisor's support in schools will be coordinated and approved by the school Principals and the Principal of Indigenous Education.

The duties, responsibilities and requirements for the position are not limited to the above, but may include all of those in the job description for Indigenous Student Advisor.

This position is full-time permanent, and the normal work year is the school year - ten (10) months. This position is based on a thirty-five (35) hour work week. The compensation range for this position is $27.17 - $31.80 per hour. This is a unionized position and union dues are applicable.

Participation in the OMERS Pension Plan is mandatory for all full-time permanent employees, even if currently in receipt of an OMERS pension.
