SOCIAL WORKER - INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

1.0 FTE Temporary position (until May 28, 2026)

The Simcoe County District School Board is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Social Worker Indigenous Education. Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Social Work Services with an indirect reporting line to the Assistant Manager / Lead of Indigenous Education, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting schools in the development and implementation of preventative and promotional strategies that address student well-being for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. The Social Worker will provide individual and group counselling for students, consultative services to schools, students, and families, liaise with community agencies, provide general resource information to multi-disciplinary teams, maintain statistical data and documentation, provide suicide and violent risk assessment, and support school communities that have been impacted by a traumatic event.

The successful candidate will be assigned to school locations throughout the county. Geographic areas are subject to change based on the needs of the students.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or a Bachelor of Social Work with a specialization in Indigenous Studies is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters of Social Work (MSW);

Membership, in good standing, with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW);

Three (3) years' experience in providing consultative services to schools to support children and adolescents and their families, and in the provision of individual, and group counselling;

Previous experience supporting First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities is required;

Experience supervising employees, e.g., Social Workers, Child and Youth Workers or similar paraprofessionals who provide short-term supportive counselling and other support services for children and adolescents;

Knowledge and training in evidence-based social work theory, practice, and interventions, e.g., suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, group work, mental health interventions.

Pertinent Skills and Experience:

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Excellent interpersonal skills;

Effective skills in co-operative planning and action;

Knowledge of community and social service agencies, their mandate, programs, and services, including those that serve the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit families;

Ability to work as a team member with Superintendents, Principals, Teachers, Resource staff, students/and/or their families and community agencies;

Knowledge of current political, cultural, and social awareness of issues impacting First Nation, Métis, and Inuit youth;

Strong planning and organizational skills, and attention to detail skills;

Excellent computer skills including experience with data management systems, MS Office Applications Word and Excel;

Training in Cognitive Behavioural, Brief Solution and Single Session interventions, SafeTALK, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), the ASK Workshop and Mental Health First Aid, would be an asset;

Experience in an educational setting is preferred;

Reliable transportation required;

The nature of this position will require the successful candidate to service large geographical areas; mileage reimbursement at the Board approved rate;

Other duties as assigned by the Principal of Indigenous Education and or the Assistant Manager of Social Work Services.

This position is a thirty-five (35) hour work week and is based on working the school year - ten (10) months and ten (10) days. The compensation range for this position is $68,663 - $84,641 per year. Compensation for candidates who hold their Master of Social Work is $76,095 to $93,939 per year. This is a unionized position and union dues are applicable. The nature of this position will require the successful candidate to service large geographical areas, mileage reimbursement at the Board approved rate.

Participation in the OMERS Pension Plan is mandatory for all full-time permanent employees,
