About the role

As a member of the Canadian Finance team reporting to the AVP, Financial Planning and Analysis, the Director Financial Optimization is responsible for supporting a wide range of initiatives to optimize financial performance in SLF Canada, with a focus on capital deployment. You will do this by leading a team and partnering with stakeholders across Sun Life to identify, evaluate and execute these initiatives. What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the Capital Planning process for Canada. Partner with business units, ALM, Actuarial and Finance to develop Canada's capital ambitions over the Plan and Strategic Plan horizons. Present results and provide insights and recommendations to Senior Management to drive improved performance through optimal capital deployment.
  • Prepare quarterly Management Reporting on capital results and present to the SVP and CFO, Canada as well as the Canadian Capital Management Committee. Deliver transparency and insights on Canada's drivers of capital consumption and identify opportunities to improve financial performance.
  • Partner with leaders in the Business Units, Finance and Actuarial, ALM, and Corporate to identify capital and surplus liquidity optimization opportunities. Lead the development of feasibility studies sizing up impacts, costs, risks and alternatives for each solution.
  • In partnership with ALM and Business Units, develop execution plans for selected initiatives and lead/support execution, as required.
  • Support the capital forecast process ensuring a strong alignment between capital consumption and business drivers
  • Support other initiatives as required to optimize capital deployment including, portfolio of business reviews, M&A transactions, etc.

    What you’ll need to succeed

    • FSA and/or FCIA designation with working experience in a Life Insurance Company. Experience in Valuation, LICAT and/or ALM would be an asset.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
    • Effective people management abilities
    • Superior technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability think creatively and approach challenges from many angles
    • Ability to influence business partners across SLF Canada
    • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with senior management, including the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly
    • Self-motivated and results-oriented
    • Strong leadership abilities to build a skilled and high performing team

    The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
