Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is undertaking a renewal of our digital communications environments, including the development and launch of new hospital, foundation and research institute websites. We are seeking a skilled leader who is keen on shaping the future of digital communications at Sunnybrook with an emphasis on superior user experience and adherence to accessibility standards.
Position profile:
Our team is looking for a skilled Digital Lead with a strong background in developing, coordinating and maintaining digital and web environments to join our Strategic Communications team. Reporting to the Manager, Digital and Visual Communications, the Digital Lead will use their years of experience to oversee and maintain multiple websites within multiple environments, including but not limited to Sunnybrook’s external websites and intranet. The ideal candidate is a self-starter and thought leader in front-end development best practices, with strong knowledge of user experience design, web analytics and content management systems. The role will work closely with all members of the Strategic Communications team as well as in close partnership with Information Service and the Sunnybrook Foundation.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Website Development & Maintenance:
- Support the launch of new website CMS system using WordPress
- Manage and maintain websites and web applications using ASP, ASP.NET, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web technologies
- Ensure cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility, troubleshooting any issues that arise
- Advise on and implement new features and enhancements based on company and user needs
- Be a subject matter expert of the WordPress and web development platforms and provide training to colleagues on content management system
- Content Management:
- Collaborate with content creators and marketing teams to manage and update website content as well as the hospital’s digital signage, newsletter and wayfinding software
- Maintain CMS (e.g. WordPress, or other systems), ensuring smooth content delivery and publishing workflows
- Server & Database Management:
- Oversee internal (IIS) and external web servers (Linux), as well as cloud-based hosting (i.e. Amazon AWS) to ensure uptime, reliability, and performance
- Manage databases (SQL Server), ensuring proper integration with web applications
- Perform server patching as requested by Information Services
- Collaborate with Information Services on web server and database server upgrades
- Security & Compliance:
- Adhere to Sunnybrook’s Architecture and Standards Review Board and IT approval processes
- Maintain and implement security best practices, such as HTTPS
- Review security vulnerabilities and take immediate corrective actions to address them
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations such AODA (accessibility) standards
- SEO & Analytics:
- Implement on-page SEO best practices, optimizing websites for search engines
- Monitor website performance using analytics tools (i.e. Google Analytics) and create reports to drive data-driven decision-making
- Troubleshooting & Support:
- Provide technical support for website-related and certain digital signage-related issues
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve website performance bottlenecks and functionality issues
- Communicate directly with vendors to perform bug fixes and application enhancements
- Qualifications:
- 5+ years proven experience in digital
- Strong proficiency in ASP, ASP.NET, C#, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and other front-end and back-end web technologies
- Familiar with project management methodologies and a strong ability to meet deadlines
- Possesses sense of personal responsibility for the overall success of the team
- Proficiency with PHP would be an asset
- Extensive experience with SQL Server and database management
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint would be an asset
- Strong familiarity with IIS web servers and cloud-based hosting solutions, especially Amazon AWS
- Extensive experience with CMS platforms especially WordPress
- Strong understanding of website architecture, UI/UX principles, and responsive design
- Solid understanding of SEO, web analytics, and performance optimization
- Knowledge of security best practices and data protection standards
- Solid understanding of AODA requirements (web accessibility)
- Experience with email marketing tools, such as MailChimp
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills to easily translate complex technical solutions or issues into plain language
- Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-activity work environment
