Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is seeking a dynamic and experienced communication manager who has superior writing skills, thrives in a fast-paced collaborative environment, and is passionate about supporting internal and corporate communications.
Summary of duties:
Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Communications, the Manager, Corporate Communications is an integral part of the communications team who works collaboratively with both department colleagues and partners across the organization to develop and implement strategic communication initiatives to support corporate priorities. The Manager, Corporate Communications is a strategic partner supporting internal and corporate communications at Sunnybrook, particularly with staff, physicians, and key partners.
The role includes leading and executing integrated communications strategies that help drive our vision, while helping to steward the brand and reputation.
Primary responsibilities:
- Working in a team environment, lead the development and integration of internal communication plans, programs and strategies across the organization while aligning the department’s framework and practices to ensure consistent and seamless communications to all stakeholders.
- Consult with corporate programs to establish their communication needs and levels of support.
- Contribute innovative and creative thought leadership on the development of internal and partner communication strategies to engage staff, physicians and partners (e.g. the Accreditation, Ontario Health Team) in key activities at Sunnybrook while supporting organizational goals.
- Serve as a strategic advisor and counsel on communications needs to Sunnybrook leadership, staff and physicians to promote key priorities, support change or manage potential issues should they emerge. This includes the development of key messages, briefing notes, backgrounders and other materials for leaders to help effectively manage the organization’s reputation while ensuring transparency both day-to-day and during a crisis.
- Develop, implement and measure strategies to guide key communication publications/channels/platforms including the weekly e-newsletter, the corporate intranet, CEO updates, etc. Develop and enhance tools/platforms as required based on feedback and measurement.
- Manage special events, employee engagement communications plans and strategic initiatives that focus on service objectives and direction to shine a light on purpose, initiatives and outcomes.
- Support crisis and issues management as needed.
- Lead a team of 3-4 FTEs to implement communication strategies and provide coaching and direct leadership to drive excellence
- Assist the communications team as needed with media relations including supporting the communications/media on-call rotation.
- Ensure all communication efforts are aligned with the Sunnybrook brand and strategic priorities.
- Collaborate with the Foundation, Education and Sunnybrook Research Institute to support common priorities and leverage mutual opportunities.
- Work closely with colleagues to support the development of a new corporate website and intranet.
Qualifications and skills:
- Post-secondary education in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or another related field. Master’s degree is an asset.
- 10+ years in a communications or marketing role with multiple portfolios in fast-paced environment and managing teams.
- Exceptional written English communication skills, with experience translating complex concepts into plain language.
- A creative, strategic and dedicated communications professional, with demonstrated experience and expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of successful communications strategies including, internal communications, corporate communications, government relations, issues management and media relations.
- Exceptional English written communications skills, with superior abilities to tell compelling stories through writing, and comprehend/translate medical and technical terminology into appropriate language suitable for lay audiences.
- Highly-developed critical thinking and analytical skills, strategic planning research, project management, and special events planning and coordination.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical, planning and project-management ability.
- Experience leading a team and ability to motivate, engage and lead a team to peak performance.
- Experience with web management/content management systems and knowledge of communications analytics tools.
- Ability to manage multiple and often competing priorities and work under tight deadlines with a positive attitude.
- Ability to work in a complex environment that has a wide range of objectives, issues, stakeholder and operational factors.
- A responsible self-starter who has sound judgement, tact and diplomacy along with an outgoing attitude and strong work ethic to provide outstanding customer service in a demanding and dynamic hospital environment.
- Understanding of all facets of communication principles and best practices.
- Previous experience in a healthcare, government or academic environment is considered an asset.
