OTA/PTA job posting Specialized Geriatric Services

The OTA&PTA receives assignments from Physiotherapists (PT) and Occupational Therapists (OT), and collaborates with members of the interprofessional team to promote a safe caring environment for patients in the Geriatric Day Hospital

  • Perform a variety of appropriate therapeutic activities as directed by the supervising PT and OT. Therapeutic activities may include, but are not limited to; strengthening, range of motion, ADL training/education, set-up of wheelchair and seating products, gait training, balance training, exercise classes, providing physical assistance to PT/OT during assessment/ treatment etc.
  • Ensure the on-going integrity and function of therapeutic equipment and treatment areas
  • Manage and maintain inventory of therapeutic supplies, assessment and resource forms, and kitchen supplies
  • Provide preventive maintenance to therapy equipment
  • Maintain regular communication with the PTs and OTs regarding any changes or concerns about patient’s program or their health status, as well as on-going communication with the interprofessional team
  • Maintain accurate and timely workload measurement data, therapy minutes and documentation according to Hospital standards
  • Participates on appropriate committees pertaining to the operation of the unit/ service and participates in discipline-specific activities within Sunnybrook
  • Conduct work in a safe manner; prevention, identification and reporting of safety issues and problems; taking corrective action, where possible; attendance at safety meetings / training/ updates in accordance with the Hospital’s standards
  • Provide group education and exercise sessions as directed by OT, PT
  • Directly supervise OTA/PTA students as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned related to departmental tasks

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • OTA /PTA diploma from a recognized OTA/PTA program
  • Previous experience working with older adults in community, residential care, or transitional care settings is an asset
  • Well- developed skills in time management, problem solving, adaptability and collaboration in a team environment required
  • Proven computer skills
  • Excellent oral, written and non-verbal communication skills required
  • Demonstrate professional judgement and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families and interprofessional team
  • Proven ability to be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Good knowledge of exercise equipment, gait aids, wheelchairs and seating products preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to Person-Centred Care

 

Summary of Duties:

  • Prepare, organize and conduct individual and group therapeutic activities with assigned patients under the direction of a registered Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
  • Participate regularly in interprofessional care team, business and professional council meetings.
  • Directly supervise OTA/PTA students as assigned.
  • Complete clinical documentation and daily workload measurement.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of therapeutic supplies, assessment and resource forms, and kitchen supplies.
  • Provide preventive maintenance to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy equipment.
  • Ensure the on-going integrity and function of therapeutic equipment and treatment areas.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Diploma from a recognized college for completion of the Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant program or Diploma from a recognized Occupational Therapist Assistant or a Physiotherapist Assistant program and completion of the corresponding bridging program is required.
  • Excellent oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rehabilitation principles and ability to communicate and work successfully in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated professional judgment and interpersonal skills in dealing with the patients their families, other health care team members and the community are equally essential skills.
  • Proven ability to be responsible for carrying out delegated tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Previous experience, preferably in a rehabilitation setting, is preferred.
