Classification: Temporary Full-Time (approx. 1 year contract)

 

Summary of Duties

 The role of the Project Manager includes enhancing OR recruitment, increased retention of OR staff, decreased staff turnover, and to aid in the support of nursing students in the OR environment. 
 

Responsibilities include:
 
•    Demonstrates theoretical and practical knowledge as outlined in the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) Standards. 
•    Work with the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), to provide initial orientation to the clinical area for novice nurses hired to the OR. 
•    Collaborate with the APN, Patient Care Manager (PCM), and Team Leaders in the ORs to create assignments to meet the novice nurses’ learning. 
•    Provide support to novice OR nurses and students to identify, support, and meet their learning objectives and navigation of the OR environment and culture. 
•    Provide a safe space for novice nurses and students to ask questions and learn. 
•    Provide daily guidance and leadership to novice OR nurses and students and support them in the development of their nursing skills in the OR. 
•    Consult with buddied OR staff regarding learners’ progress and need for any support. 
•    Consults with the faculty course coordinator/instructor regarding the ongoing progress of students. 
•    Identifies novice nurses and students that are struggling in the clinical area to develop a success plan, in partnership with the APN. 
•    Maintain confidentiality and respect during interactions with OR nurses, OR Leadership, and other stakeholders. 
•    Lead in the deployment and implementation of recruitment initiatives for OR nursing. 
•    Strive to optimize the newly hired OR nurse experience by fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. 
•    Provide updates to Nursing Education regarding number of student learners and progress. 
•    Advocate for learning opportunities and supportive learning environments for the novice OR nurse and student by facilitating partnerships with buddied OR staff and interprofessional stakeholders. 
•    Facilitate the preceptorship of OR staff to support learners. 

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current RN registration with College of Nurses (CNO) of Ontario, in good standing
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BScN) required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Perioperative Certificate Program Graduate required
  • Minimum five (5) years current operating room RN experience required
  • Canadian Nurses Association Perioperative Certification preferred
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills
  • Commit to working with the students in a supervisory role
  • Excellent attendance record
  • Excellent organization/time management skills
  • Previous experience as a preceptor
  • Previous OR leadership experience an asset
  • Strong computer and educational technology skills
