Job Description:

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Manager, Women and Children's Program the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning implementation and evaluating patient care and practice activities in a multidisciplinary family centred care environment. The Genetic Counsellor is responsible for patient genetic assessment, counselling and support of prenatal patients, follow up as appropriate, documentation, education development, and diagnostic work ups where appropriate. Requirements:
• Masters degree in genetic counselling or equivalent combination of education and training
• Board certified or Board eligible with Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC)
• One year of recent genetic counselling experience (prenatal and general) preferred
• Ability to work effectively without close supervision and ability to work as part of a Regional Genetics Service
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
• Excellent organization and leadership skills
• Provides prenatal and general genetics counselling services (risk assessment, testing options, booking appropriate procedures, communication of results, provision of education materials)
• Communicates and consults with other health care professionals and functions as a member of the health care team, including the regional genetics centre at North York General Hospital
• Works as part of a team with physician-geneticist by consulting regarding pending referrals, providing patient management throughout the consultation process and arranging follow-up testing as required
• Initiates referrals to hospital and community based programs for required services
• Interprets and implements hospital and departmental policies, programs and procedures as required
• Maintains quality assurance in genetic counselling services
• Participates in continuing medical education
• Serves on committees as requested
• Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients
• Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area
• Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public
• Demonstrates good pattern of attendance
