Job Description:
Position Overview:
The department seeks to identify a Physician Assistant to join our team to provide day-to-day management of patients with red blood cell disorders (RBCD), including sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and other red blood cell disorders, in close collaboration with staff physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, trainees, other allied health and support personnel.
The Physician Assistant will support the Hematologist physicians with assigned or delegated tasks assigned by the physician. The physician maintains primary responsibility for patient care as the principle medical decision-maker. The type of work delegated, and the extent of direct supervision provided to the PA will be dependent on the physician’s scope of practice and SHN policy. Typical tasks may include:
• Conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories
• Performing physical examinations and procedures
• Providing counseling on preventive health care
• Performing controlled acts as delegated by a physician
• Performing other tasks within the supervising physician’s scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete.
The PA will be based at Scarborough Centenary Hospital. The PA will focus on improving and enhancing the access to care, the quality of care, and therapy related symptom management. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis. There is also potential for involvement in quality improvement initiatives and research.
Responsibilities
Participate in the day to day management of patients and assist in the management of side effects in close collaboration with staff physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, trainees, other allied health and support personnel.
Patient assessments, investigations, symptom management, and follow up care, for both newly diagnosed patients, and those undergoing continuing treatment.
Utilizing and demonstrating an advanced level of clinical knowledge, competence and excellence in caring for patients with RBCD.
Collecting and interpreting data about the health of patients, symptom management, developing a medical diagnosis and management plan in a team environment.
Quality improvement, research, and administrative responsibilities.
Participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development.
Interact with other team members including staff physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, trainees, other allied health and support personnel both within the department, the Scarborough Health Network, and other comprehensive care centres for RBCD within Canada and abroad.
Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Requirements:
Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC
Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
Current ACLS and BCLS
Recent clinical experience in adult primary care preferred
Education in or experience with quality improvement is an asset
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
Willingness to work with the team to develop appropriate medical directives and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs
