Shared Hospital Laboratory Inc. (SHL) is an independent corporation owned and operated by Scarborough Health Network, North York General Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Job Description:
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Manager of the Shared Hospital Laboratory, the research coordinator works with the microbiologists and laboratory staff to design and conduct research, validation, and quality improvement projects. Tasks involve project design, following study protocols, collection, analysis and presentation of data in both written and oral formats. This position also requires the ability to perform tasks in a clinical microbiology laboratory utilizing bacteriology, mycology, and molecular methods.
Responsibilities:
• Initiate and develop validation, quality improvement, and research proposals and protocols.
• Perform studies related to bacteriology, mycology, and molecular microbiology in a clinical microbiology laboratory.
• Collect, analyze, and present data surrounding the specific area of research.
• Oral and written presentation of studies, including drafting validation documents and scientific papers.
• Other relevant duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science or equivalent. Preference will be given to individuals with advanced training (e.g. MSc, PhD)
• At least 5 years of research related experience, preferred bacteriology, mycology, and molecular microbiology experience.
• Ability to work independently and as part of team alongside microbiologists, laboratory staff, and other research coordinators.
• Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills.
• Superior organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills, including trouble shooting projects and methods.
• As applicable, knowledge of laboratory and diagnostic testing, health record analysis, computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database and statistical software.
• Demonstrates values consistent with SHL’s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazard.
• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community.
