General Purpose
The International Student Experience unit within Student Experience, requires a Coordinator, International Student Programs to support the orientation, transition, and retention of international students through arrival, transition, and retention programming. This work involves designing, implementing, and assessing events, presentations, workshops, and programming, both in-person and online that support international students, foster student engagement, and promote intercultural competency development.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will liaise regularly with individuals and groups across campus to develop a programming infrastructure to support the transition, persistence, and development of international students. The Coordinator will develop and maintain relationships with multiple stakeholders, including students and student groups, Student Experience team members, and University of Guelph departments.
The Coordinator will supervise and provide direction for approximately 5 student Peer Helpers and a small number of part-time student staff.
The Coordinator will represent the department at a range of institutional events, meetings, and programs, and contribute to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of a variety of areas within International Student Experience. They will participate in the development and implementation of action plans and associated budgets for the unit, including annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
Requirements
- A Master’s degree in international development, social sciences, higher education, or another related field, coupled with progressive experience working in community development and/or higher education. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
- Experience in program design, learning outcome development, and assessment.
- Experience in devising strategies to support retention in a community.
- Experience in supervision of volunteers and student staff.
- Experience with designing, implementing, and evaluating training programs for student volunteers and/or student staff.
- Ability to collaborate amongst diverse groups and in intercultural settings.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a high level of judgment and diplomacy.
- Substantial knowledge of diverse cultures, worldviews, and international student identity development, informed by practical experience working with racialized, ethnically diverse, and culturally diverse communities.
- A strong skill set in effective communication in cross-cultural and intercultural settings.
- Strong understanding and practical experience applying anti-oppression and anti-racist principles in programs and services.
- Skills to present in front of large groups in-person and online (e.g. 200+ people).
- A strong aptitude in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
- Intermediate level Microsoft365, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
