General Purpose
Reporting to the Supervisor, Patient Care and Service Delivery and under the direction of a clinician, the Shift Lead RVT participates as a member of the healthcare team of the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre. The Shift Lead position will provide functional guidance to the approximately 10 technical staff and summer students daily (who are full time from May to September and part-time throughout the year) in the Health Sciences Companion Animal Hospital (Intensive Care Unit and Companion Animal Wards).
Duties and Responsibilities

Distribute additional duties to the staff ensuring that policies and procedures of the hospital are followed and monitor the completion of said tasks (eg. Inventory counts, maintenance of equipment, etc.).

Co-ordinate and organize workload and workflow for staff, students and volunteers.

Assist with the daily schedule and cover for daily breaks, lunches, appointments and relief coverage.

Responsible for performing technical duties directly as required (expectation is that the incumbents will work on the floor approximately 95% of the time).

Work with the clinical team to ensure patient locations are assigned appropriately (between ICU and wards) based on established patient care criteria.

Provide training and orientation to new equipment.

Arranging for maintenance of equipment, troubleshooting broken equipment and identifying non-functional equipment to the supervisor for repair/replacement as required.

Ensures knowledge of patients arriving and/or leaving the various departments within the Companion Animal Hospital (I.e. ICU, Small Animal Wardsetc.) and understands the need for space allocations based on patient movements. Works with clinicians, other service technicians to ensure space is available as needed on a daily basis.

Participating in orientating new team members to the Companion Animal Hospital and work closely with all staff to ensure training manuals are completed.

Provide training and coaching in technical procedures performed in the Companion Animal Hospital and provide training progress updates to the supervisor.

Coordinates on-going training program for keeping staff’s skill levels current and up to OVC HSC standards.

Provide for and organize weekly Phase 4 student orientation for the Intensive Care Unit.

Provide verbal feedback to employees (positive and corrective) and report to the supervisor as well as proving input into the performance reviews of staff.
Requirements

2-year College Diploma
-
3 years working experience in an environment using advanced technical and leadership skills

Successful completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) and supervisory and/or management development courses.

Full member in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)

Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and the OAVT mandatory ethics exam. OAVT registration is required for this position.

3 years technical experience in an emergency and critical care environment and 1 year leadership experience is required.

Demonstrated proficiency in customer service: excellent communication and organizational skills particularly with respect to dealing with clients; ability to mentor students and staff, and contribute to a collaborative team environment

Demonstrate time management and creative problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize in high stress environments is required.

Familiarity with common computer software including Hospital Management Information System software is preferred.

Flexibility in scheduling availability is required. The incumbent will be required to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends.
The successful applicant will be required to provide proof of rabies titre.
