Term: 2 years
This position is responsible for supporting the development of optomechanical designs for trapped ion quantum processors within the Quantum Information with Trapped Ions (QITI) research group, led by Professor Kazi Rajibul Islam at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) in Waterloo. The processors leverage the precision and scalability of ion trap systems to advance quantum computing research, providing an accessible platform for the global quantum community.
This position is contingent on funding.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborate with the design team to support the development and refinement of optomechanical structures and components for the ion trap quantum computing project
- Utilize CAD software (preferably Autodesk Inventor) to design and model mechanical structures, mounts, fixtures, and enclosures that support optical elements such as lasers, lenses, mirrors, and other devices essential for ion trap systems
- Assist in ensuring precise alignment, stability, and robustness of components to maintain optical path integrity and mechanical durability
- Work closely with researchers and engineers to support the integration of the quantum processor into experimental setups and computational models
- Aid in testing and troubleshooting optomechanical assemblies, optimizing designs based on experimental data
- Document design processes, specifications, and modifications to maintain clear records for future development and reproducibility
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- Utilize CAD software (preferably Autodesk Inventor) to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings for various projects
- Assist with the design, prototyping, and testing of mechanical components and assemblies
- Support the manufacturing team with machining processes, ensuring precision and adherence to specifications
- Work hands-on in the assembly and testing of components to verify quality and functionality
- Participate in project planning, review meetings, and documentation of project progress
- Knowledge of supporting optomechanical systems
- Expertise in designing structures and components that support and align optical elements, ensuring stability, precision, and durability
- Experience with mounts, fixtures, and enclosures for lasers, lenses, and mirrors will be an advantage
- Proficiency in CAD software, with experience in Autodesk Inventor preferred
- Knowledge of machining processes and tools, with hands-on experience in a workshop or lab environment a plus
- Strong understanding of mechanical assembly and design principles
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate technical concepts clearly
- Be an integral part of the team working towards building the next-generation quantum processor
