Responsibilities and goals associated with the position
Reporting to the Senior Dispatcher, the Telecommunications Operator at Inspection Public Security enforces telecommunications standards and guidelines under her or his responsibility. The Telecommunications Operator receives, records and transmits – by telephone, two-way radio, email or telewriter – complaints and requests originating from the City’s telephone switchboard, the public, and municipal employees, regarding the activities of departments, divisions and sections.
The main responsibilities are as follows:
- Receive telephone calls from the public concerning street conditions, broken water mains, lighting or traffic light system failures or any other problems related to municipal services or other utilities;
- Record the types of calls, the time received and other relevant information on index cards and track the calls; take required steps to record calls automatically;
- Forward incoming calls to appropriate individuals in accordance with priorities, by radiotelephone, telephone or telewriter;
- See that all complaints are forwarded to the appropriate organizations and ensure follow-up;
- Monitor alarm consoles for municipal buildings and surveillance cameras and advise the appropriate persons about malfunctions and activated alarms;
- Compile data and prepare statistics about these activities;
- Employ, as required, various office automation devices to carry out certain job-related tasks, using appropriate programming;
- Perform all other related tasks.
