Job Summary:

The HLA Laboratory plays a central and crucial role in the Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant program at CancerCare Manitoba. HLA laboratory performs histocompatibility, immunogenetics and transplantation testing on human specimens, for purposes of reporting specific results relevant to the treatment and management of patient care. The Medical Laboratory Technologist at this laboratory exercises significant independent judgment, initiative and decision making, extreme accuracy and attention to detail.

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, the Charge Technologist is responsible for performing HLA typing by molecular techniques (including NGS), flow cytometry assays, Luminex bead-based assays, chimerism testing, interpreting and reporting results. The Charge Technologist will be responsible for day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operation and technologist performing testing and reporting test result, and management of Lab QA program. Will participate in continuing education.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Technology training program who has attained certification by the CSMLS or equivalent.
  • Current licensing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM)
  • Must have minimum 3 years recent directly related experience in histocompatibility in an ASHI-accredited or an equivalent ARB approved laboratory.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to perform procedures such as the preparation of DNA, HLA typing by molecular techniques (including NGS), flow cytometry assays, cross match assay, Luminex bead-based assays, chimerism testing.
  • Must be able to work independently. Must have good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

  • Physical requirement: Works in a busy environment around physicians, technologists, other hospital teammates and visitors. Must be able to actively walk and navigate throughout the work area around equipment. Works in an area which contains infectious materials, chemical hazards, and fire and mechanical hazards. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift light approximately (20 Ibs.) loads.

Preferred:

  • Successful completion of courses in immunology or molecular biology as well as CHT or CHS with an advanced academic achievement an asset
  • Advanced computer skills including database development and management preferred.
  • Experience managing QA program.

Asset:

  • Ability to speak French
