Term to June 27, 2025

Under the supervision and direction of the Principal and/or designate, the Interpreter is responsible for facilitating learning and communication among students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing in an educational setting; providing interpretive assistance to individual or small groups of students in designated Special Education Department programs and inclusive settings; providing assistance to teachers as required; supervising students as required; and other various duties.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Provide English-ASL classroom interpreting for students who are Deaf

Facilitates learning and communication among students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Assists with interpreting academic subject and classroom activities. Provides classroom interpreting, platform interpreting and one-to-one or small group tutoring. Assists with specialized communication/adaptive devices and instructional materials. Checks and troubleshoots student amplification equipment.

Provides interpretive, instructional and general assistance to individual or small groups of students. Implements daily programming for students including clinical programs; modifies and/or adapts classroom materials as required for instructional purposes under the direction of the teacher. Assists students in classroom integration, including social and behavioural issues. Assists with the implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEP’s) and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBP’s) and reinforcement of targeted goals.

Provides assistance to teachers as required. Observes and records student academic progress and behaviour and reports observations to teachers.

Supervises students during the temporary absence of a teacher; monitors small groups during academic and instructional sessions. Supervises designated student(s) as required; and encourages interaction amongst students.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as and may provide interpreter services for school and parents as required. Provides support to others in the absence of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Qualifications:

Complete secondary education, successful completion of a recognized American Sign Language English Interpreter Program and a minimum of two years previous experience working with hearing impaired students in an educational environment

Equivalent combination of training and/or skills may be considered

Knowledge and understanding of the related Division policies and procedures is desirable.
