IP Network Designer

Xplore is looking for an individual to help evolve and scale our internet routing platform delivering increased value to our end customers. As part of the Backbone Network Engineering team, the IP Network Designer will be responsible for the design and architectural evolution of Xplore’s internet gateway services and regional IP network.
This position reports to the Manager, IP Backbone Engineering in Markham, Ontario.

Key responsibilities include:

• Architect and implement a best in class internet delivery architecture maximizing performance for our customers and minimizing operational cost
• Own and manage relationships with strategic peering, transit and content partners, representing Xplore within the internet community
• Develop, implement and maintain security standards and procedures, including application and infrastructure hardening guides and best common practices for key infrastructure
• Stay current with industry best practices and emerging trends for service provider internet access and gateway technologies
• Research new architectures, technologies, vendors and features
• Develop tools for measurement, analysis and optimization of network performance
• Create and execute detailed lab test plans for new architectures, technologies, vendors and features
• Install the necessary hardware/cables to implement and maintain physical and logical network simulations in the Markham lab facility
• Work with colocation partners to create facilities specifications for new equipment installations and upgrades
• Create Engineering Work Orders (EWO), Methods of Procedure (MOP) and other Process documentation as required by IP Operations and NOC to install and operate new deployments
• Provide third level problem escalation support
• Create documentation and provide training on the architecture, operations and troubleshooting of Xplore’s internet connection architecture
• Prepare and deliver presentations for internal and external stake holders
• Participate in an On-call rotation according to the schedule

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Engineering Degree (Electrical or Computer Science) is preferred
• Minimum 5 years of core network architecture and design experience in a service provider environment with a focus on internet connectivity and routing
• Extensive knowledge of internet delivery architectures with an in-depth understanding of the technical and budgetary implications and trade-offs associated with design decisions made at all network layers
• Experience with network automation, orchestration and scripting using tools such as Python, Ansible, or similar.
• In-depth knowledge of Cisco IOS, IOS-XR, IOS-XE and NX-OS - associated industry / vendor certifications would be an asset
• In-depth knowledge of BGP, OSPF, MPLS, ISIS, VPNv4, IPv4/IPv6 environments
• In depth knowledge of typical Service Provider Ethernet service offerings and MEF
• In depth knowledge of switching technologies such as VLANs, QinQ and Spanning Tree
• Knowledge of IP/Ethernet Quality of Service features such as classification, marking, queueing and shaping
• Knowledge of networking equipment from vendors such as Cisco, Ciena, Juniper, Adva
• Professional certifications such as Cisco CCIE Service Provider, Juniper JNCIE, or equivalent, are highly desirable.
• Knowledge of the DDoS protection platforms - Arbor preferable
• Good written and verbal English communication
• Attention to detail ensuring accurate network documentation and written standards are created for use by Network peers
• Proven ability to break down barriers and foster collaboration across functions and teams
• Willingness to challenge the status quo looking for new and innovative solutions to engineering problems
• Willingness to undertake occasional travel
