About this opportunity:

The Director, Government Affairs is responsible for developing and implementing public policy strategies that align with company objectives. The successful candidate will lead the organization’s engagement with federal, provincial, and municipal governments, as well as industry associations and key stakeholders, to advocate for policies that support and align with Cenovus's mission to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable energy for the future.

This position is based in Calgary, AB, with occasional travel to government offices and industry meetings across Canada and to the United States.

What you’ll do:

  • Continue to develop and implement a proactive government affairs strategy to support Cenovus’s business objectives across its operations

  • Monitor and analyze political, legislative, and regulatory developments, assessing their potential impact on Cenovus’s operations and strategy

  • Provide executive leadership with actionable insights and recommendations to navigate evolving political and regulatory landscapes

  • Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with government officials, policymakers, regulators, and industry associations, ensuring Cenovus’s voice is represented in policy decisions

  • Lead the team responsible for the development of policy positions, white papers, and submissions to government consultations, ensuring alignment with the Cenovus’s values and objectives

  • Oversee the Government Affairs team, providing strategic direction, mentorship, and support to ensure high performance and alignment with corporate priorities

  • Cultivate a collaborative culture within the team that values innovation and adaptability in response to a dynamic political and regulatory environment

  • Act as the company’s spokesperson on government affairs matters, participating in public forums, conferences, and industry events

  • Collaborate with internal departments, including communications, legal, operations, and sustainability, to ensure cohesive messaging and alignment with corporate objectives

  • Ensure the company’s government interactions align with all applicable laws and ethical standards

  • Stay informed of lobbying registration requirements and reporting obligations, ensuring full compliance

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role

  • Extensive knowledge of the Canadian political, legislative, and regulatory landscape, particularly within the energy sector

  • Proven track record of influencing policy and building relationships with government officials and stakeholders

  • Visionary leadership with the ability to anticipate and adapt to changing political and economic landscapes

  • Experience leading and managing high-performing teams

  • Dedication to Cenovus’s core values, including sustainability, innovation, and respect for people and communities

  • Collaborative approach with the ability to build consensus across diverse groups

  • Integrity, professionalism, and a deep understanding of the public’s expectations of the energy industry in Canada
