ITS Security Officer

Working at the District School Board

elementary and secondary schools in Niagara, located between Lake Erie in the

South and Lake Ontario to the North.

The Information Technology Services Department (ITS) requires an innovative/energetic professional to work within the Board’s continuously evolving, multi-tiered Data Centre/ Cloud environment. Reporting to the Manager of Information Technology Services, the ITS Security Officer will coordinate responsibilities in the following broad categories: Data Centre operations, Cybersecurity incident/response and mitigation, Server and database administration, Cloud server and business system operations.

Responsibilities :

Monitor the network and provide early warning of abnormalities, problems or malicious activities.

Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, training and awareness policies for staff.

Triage security events and develop baseline controls toward cyber security incident response, detection and network monitoring/defense, automate patching of systems and applications, backup and disaster recovery hardening practices, security asset management of all IT systems, data recovery, and service provider management.

Liaise with ECNO RISA and implement systems and industry best practices in collaboration with provincial/federal partners, school boards and industry partners (i.e - Ministry, OASBO, ECNO, school boards, technology and security vendors)

Develop board policies and functional procedures/best practices by implementing established security frameworks and CVE bulletins within the Board (i.e - NIST, Cyber Security Ontario, Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency)

Analyze existing IT security solutions and make recommendations and action changes toward continuous improvement

Liaise within IT and all DSBN departments to ensure application security best practices are followed

Coordinate IT Department/business audits as per regional audit requirements.Coordinate/managesecurity audits of operating systems, web servers, database servers, networks etc

Process and document change management procedures

Lead and coordinate DSBN data centre on-premise / cloud operations and maintenance of all IT systems, networks and application solutions

Other duties as assigned

Skills, Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Minimum 3-year college diploma/university degree in an Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.

Experience working in a K-12 educational or related environment, supporting staff and students is an asset.

Work experience in an enterprise level IT department is preferred.

Proven experience in datacenter operations and security technologies and best practices.

CISSP certification (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), and industry security certifications (ex - Microsoft Security Operations analyst etc) is preferred.

Experience or certifications with Enterprise Architecture, Active Directory, Microsoft Azure Active Directory, Cloud architectures, automated machine detection/mitigation and response is preferred.

Certifications and experience with IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection System / Intrusion Prevention System), End Point Protection, EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) is preferred.

Working knowledge of enterprise operating systems, client operating systems, database servers and web servers.

Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication and presentation skills.

Proven capacity in working both independently and in team-oriented, collaborative environments is essential.

Professionalism and client-focused service , learning, communication and organizational skills are essential to this position.

Demonstrated technical skills in the following technologies preferred:

Applications: Windows, Office 365, Azure, TOPDESK

Servers: Windows Server, MS SQL Server 2016+, Apache Tomcat

Databases: MS SQL, MS Access, Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, MySQL

A valid driver’s license is required, along with the ability to travel to schools, offices and offsite locations as required.

Salary range: $86,355 - $100,976 including comprehensive benefit plan. This is a full time, 12 month, 35 hour per week in-person position, with flexibility for work from home, and is part of the Board’s union-exempt Administrative Management Group.
