Indigenous Education Graduation Coach/Teacher (9-12)

As part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through education, we are dedicated to improving educational outcomes for Indigenous students. To do this effectively, we must hire individuals who carry Indigenous knowledge and lived experience, and are committed, to support Indigenous student success. This position is for a one-year term beginning September 2024, with the potential to extend the term. The re-engagement teacher will report to the Student Achievement Leader of Indigenous Education.

Duties :

Provides academic support to self-identified First Nations, Métis and Inuit secondary students to increase achievement and graduation rates using a combination of one-on-one, small group and in-class support.

Works collaboratively to develop learning plans with appropriate school, family and community supports.

Develops strategies with each student such as incorporating IEP modifications and accommodations, advocating for students’ learning styles with classroom teachers, plans for transition support, post-secondary planning, graduation and career attainment.

Facilitates workshops for Indigenous students in collaboration with the Indigenous Education Team.

Develop relationships and work in collaboration with Indigenous community members and organizations to contribute to Indigenous student success and improve graduation rates.

Support graduating students with post-secondary applications/program selection and advises students on scholarship opportunities.

Provide information, data, and assistance on self-identified First Nations, Métis and Inuit students’ progress, as requested by the Student Achievement Leader

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Student Achievement Leader

Qualifications :

A valid Ontario Teaching Certificate

Knowledge of Indigenous Culture and Ways of Knowing

General knowledge of Ministry of Ontario Secondary Curriculum

Preference will be given to a First Nations, Métis and Inuit teacher with lived experience

Preference will be given to candidates who have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience at the secondary level

Experience :

Evidence of exemplary culturally relevant teaching practice

Evidence of collaboration with Indigenous community members and organizations to enhance student success

Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively with school staff and members of the Indigenous community

Evidence of working well with others in a collaborative team approach

Other relevant experience such as Adult Education, Special Education, Cooperative Education, and or Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR), would be an asset.
