Position Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance Services, and upon receipt of an electronic work order, the Carpenter is responsible for, and performs a wide variety of duties related to, including, but not limited to, the repair, maintenance, installation and construction of the interior and exterior of school structures and other Board facilities, school fixtures and equipment, school grounds, and associated items as they apply to the carpentry trade, to ensure that school buildings and Board facilities are in a proper state of repair.

Major Functions and Responsibilities

Ø Understands, complies, contributes and participates with Board policies and procedures.

Ø Repairs, in accordance with work orders, the structures of school buildings to ensure that all buildings are in a proper state of repair. Reads instructions, interprets and assesses work order requests, construction plans, drawings, and sketches.

Ø Constructs, repairs and installs Board furniture, interior millwork, cupboards, shelving, countertops and cabinets from raw materials, as requested through work orders, by selecting appropriate materials, wood, wood substitutes, plastic laminates, veneers, hardware and other associated materials and utilizing appropriate carpentry techniques, equipment and tools within schools and Board facilities. Performs mathematical calculations to ensure precise construction and economic use of material.

Ø Measures, cuts, constructs, alters, repairs, maintains, installs, assembles and dismantles, including, but not limited to, building architectural components made of wood, wood substitute, laminates, acrylics, glass, metal, drywall, and associated hardware in accordance with calculated measurements and predetermined specifications.

Ø Selects, prepares, operates, maintains and performs minor repairs to hand tools and power tools, stationary machines and other related equipment, as well as assists and/or trains other staff in their proper and safe use.

Ø Ensures work is complete and labour and materials are documented where applicable for costing to appropriate accounts.

Ø Maintains and monitors work area, equipment and working environments regularly to maintain a safe and hazard free workplace.

Ø Performs minor glazing and caulking, and replaces glass and all associated framing, and metal siding required for door and window installation.

Ø Removes, repairs and replaces damaged flooring, ceramic tiles, vinyl composite tiles, vinyl/rubber baseboard, carpet, sheet flooring and rotting wood floors.

Ø Removes, repairs, alters, erects and rebuilds walls and ceilings including but not limited to, the framing, insulation, drywall, taping and sanding.

Ø Installs, repairs and replaces doors, locks, crash bars, panic bars and all associated hardware in Board facilities.

Ø Repairs basketball backboards and other permanent sports equipment associated with the school buildings. Maintains or repairs playground equipment/structures such as goalposts, and basketball backboards.

Ø Performs minor masonry repairs to brickwork, blockwork and concrete.

Ø Repairs and replaces roofing and associated accessories including but not limited to, metal flashing, vents, fascia and eves trough/gutter systems.

Ø Sets up and uses scaffolding as needed.

Ø Performs any of the above repair duties in response to emergency calls so as to ensure safety, minimize disruption and maintain the security of the Board’s facilities.

Ø Performs general repairs on all other related areas not specified above.

Ø Provides input to the Plant Department for the development and continued updating of the preventive maintenance programs for all Board facilities.

Ø Advises the Supervisor, Maintenance Services of the need for changes to operational procedures and policies to make the system run more smoothly.

Ø Responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the assigned Board vehicle and ensures the vehicle is kept clean, as well as advises the Supervisor of any mechanical deficiencies.

Ø Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance Services.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Knowledge

Ø Possess a valid General Carpenter trade certificate issued by the Ontario Ministry of Training or an equivalent Canadian inter-provincial licence.

Ø Valid Ontario Driver's Licence.

Ø Minimum grade 12 secondary school education or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ø Good oral and written communication in English.

Ø Three (3) years experience in general carpentry, construction or related industry, or minimum three (3) years experience in construction or maintenance of timber framed buildings.

Ø Good working knowledge and understanding of building maintenance, the carpentry trade in general carpentry, construction or related industry trades including rough carpentry, finished carpentry, and cabinet construction, millwork or maintenance of timber-framed buildings.

Ø Sound knowledge of general construction codes and regulations.

Ø Knowledge of the “Occupational Health and Safety Act”.

Ø Incorrect actions could result in significant loss of time and resources and could impact on the health and safety of others

Ø Incorrect use of tools and equipment could impact on the health and safety of others

Supervision

Ø Directs the activities of any assigned maintenance personnel.

Contacts

Internal: Liaison with Principals, Vice Principals, Custodians and school staff to gather and provide information.

External: Liaison with suppliers to purchase materials required.

Working Conditions

Ø Ability to work alone in a self-managing role or in a team environment.

Ø Working indoors and outdoors in an environment that may be characterized by excessive exposure to a wide range of environmental conditions such as heat, dust, noise, fumes and changes in temperature and weather.

Ø Required to work at heights.
