Job Description:

About the role

As a key member of the Retail Advice & Solutions (RA&S) finance team, the Director, Accounting & Controls will work independently and collaboratively with members of the RA&S finance & actuarial team, Canadian Finance, Corporate Finance, Risk Management, Operations and internal and external audit to deliver on the accounting, controls & reporting requirements for the Insurance business. In addition, this role will continue to enhance the new processes and controls that were designed to support IFRS 17 reporting. The scope and scale of the reporting requirements managed by this role requires a high level of technical accounting proficiency, analytical insight, and operational efficiency.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead and develop a team of accounting professionals and control specialists while promoting a high performance culture and opportunities for growth
  • Overall responsibility for complete, accurate and timely monthly/quarterly/annual financial & regulatory reporting for RA&S accompanied by in-depth analysis of financial results
  • Overall responsibility for the control environment including ownership of quarterly Internal Key Control processes and Key Disclosure Analysis
  • Lead the quarterly analysis and review of finance transactions ingested into the contractual service margin calculation tool, and the insurance contract liability & reinsurance asset roll forward schedules
  • Provide leadership and support for strategic projects and initiatives impacting financial reporting and develop processes and controls to incorporate the results of these strategic projects and initiatives into efficient and effective operational procedures
  • Champion and support creative solutions that focus on continuous improvement was a focus on leveraging technology to reduce manual repetitive tasks
  • Communicate effectively with senior management and ensure issues are raised and addressed in a timely manner

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Professional accounting designation with 7+ years of relevant experience in a senior financial role
  • Strong Individual Insurance product knowledge
  • Proficient in MS excel
  • Knowledge of SAP Analysis for Office (AfO) and Tableau
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders across the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to explain difficult issues to audiences of different levels of understanding
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills to support data-driven decision making
  • Effective and strong leadership abilities to direct and develop a team of professionals
  • Self-motivated and capable of handling conflicting priorities in a dynamic and changing environment
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
