Job Description:
Under the direction of the Manager, Immunization and Travel Health Centre, this position oversees programs with specific focus on adult, high risk individuals and international travel immunization, ensuring smooth operation of those programs, providing supervision and direction for the staff, and consultation on complex public health nursing issues. The programs provide direct services in health promotion, disease prevention, immunization and treatment for aggregates, groups, families and individuals in the community.
The main responsibilities are: supervision of staff in an effective and positive manner; facilitate effective organizational planning and monitor the operating budget as assigned; assess community trends within assigned area and modifies local services and assignments as required; ensure that the service delivered to clients is of a high and consistent quality; and support processes within the organization which lead to continuous quality improvement.
Human Resources Exemption: No
Education
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing with courses in public health nursing.
- Certification with the International Society of Travel Medicine an asset.
- Additional courses in supervision and administration an asset.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in public health nursing, which includes extensive experience in immunization.
- A minimum of three (3) years recent and independent full scope international travel immunization and consultation experience (Basic and Complex).
- Additional supervisory experience an asset.
Licenses
- Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of public health nursing.
- Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of immunization.
- Extensive knowledge of travel vaccines and international travel health issues.
- Extensive knowledge of immunization as it relates to special populations.
- Knowledge of disease process in the management and control of communicable disease such as prevention techniques, infection control and outbreak management.
- Knowledge of public health laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of public health concepts and strategies.
- Knowledge of population health promotion concepts and strategies.
- Knowledge of procedures regarding vaccine procurement, storage and cold chain maintenance.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge in the use of the provincial electronic immunization registry.
- Must have demonstrated organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Skill in program or project planning, implementing change and evaluation.
- Skill in adult education methods.
- Skill in basic computer operations, word processing and spreadsheets.
- Ability to work collaboratively with community agencies and individuals.
- Ability to provide effective leadership by planning, supervising and directing the work of subordinates.
- Ability to facilitate good staff morale.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.
- Ability to mentor others.
